Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree Hardest Bosses Ranked

Promised Consort Radahn is the hardest boss in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree by the strongest overall case across the rankings reviewed. Bayle the Dread is the clearest runner-up, with Messmer, Rellana, and several matchup-sensitive fights close behind. This is an editorial ranking, not an objective difficulty score: your build, summons, Scadutree Blessing level, and which optional bosses you count can change the order.

How this ranking defines “hardest”

Boss difficulty is not a single measurable statistic. This ranking weighs how complex and repeatable a boss’s attack patterns are, how much damage and pressure they create, how reliably a player can find healing or punish windows, and how much the arena, camera, or visual effects interfere. It also accounts for progression and build matchups: a fight that punishes a particular play style may be substantially harder for some players than for others.

The order below focuses on prominent Shadow of the Erdtree fights, rather than every repeated cave or dungeon encounter. Rankings that include optional dungeon bosses have a wider candidate pool, so their middle and lower placements are not directly comparable. The Escapist’s 2026 ranking covers major fights and selected optional bosses; Dot Esports says its list focuses primarily on Remembrance bosses, with a couple of dungeon-boss additions.

The hardest Shadow of the Erdtree bosses, ranked

1. Promised Consort Radahn

Radahn is the most defensible pick for the DLC’s hardest boss. His first phase is already aggressive, but the second adds holy damage, attacks that echo after their initial strike, and broad area attacks. The resulting visual density makes it harder to read what is coming while leaving little room to recover or heal. Dot Esports puts him first among DLC bosses, and The Escapist’s DLC-focused analysis also names him the hardest. A separate 2026 ranking places him second across the full game, behind base-game Malenia.

His difficulty is especially sensitive to preparation and build. A strategy that performs well against a slower opponent may struggle to create safe openings against Radahn’s pace. The Escapist’s analysis describes a respec for the fight, underscoring that the matchup can matter as much as raw character level. A 2026 ranking says its assessment uses the post-1.14 version of Radahn; the sources reviewed do not establish a specific later balance change that would justify describing a detailed post-1.14 history.

2. Bayle the Dread

Bayle is the clearest alternative for second place and the closest rival to Radahn in The Escapist’s DLC analysis. His fast movement, area attacks, and large health pool make the fight demanding, especially when his size and movement make it difficult to keep a clean view of the action. PowerPyx groups Bayle with Radahn as the two hardest fights, while Dot Esports ranks him third in its DLC list.

There is at least one useful matchup clue: Dot Esports identifies Scarlet Rot as a weakness. That does not make the encounter easy, but it means the fight can feel different depending on whether a player’s build can exploit that vulnerability.

3. Messmer the Impaler

Messmer is a credible top-three contender. The Escapist’s 2026 broad ranking puts him third overall, citing fast attack chains, traps that punish poor spacing, and attacks that can bait a mistimed punish. Those features demand careful observation as well as quick reactions: an apparent opening is not necessarily a safe one.

The available rankings do not establish that every group of players would place Messmer above Bayle. Treat the top three as a strong tier, with Radahn the clearest number one and the next two positions open to debate.

4. Rellana, Twin Moon Knight

Rellana is a tough solo fight whose patterns become more manageable as they are learned. Dot Esports places her fourth among its DLC bosses, while The Escapist’s 2026 list puts her tenth across the broader game. That spread reflects how rankings can shift with their scope and assumptions, rather than proving that one exact position is settled.

5. Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame

Midra combines aggression with Madness pressure. Dot Esports describes him as staggerable, so players who can reliably interrupt him may find more control than his intensity first suggests. It ranks him sixth among DLC bosses; The Escapist’s 2026 broad list places him seventh overall.

6. Commander Gaius

Gaius is a useful example of why a single universal ordering is misleading. Dot Esports ranks him second among DLC bosses, while The Escapist’s 2026 ranking puts him fourteenth overall. That large gap points to a fight whose perceived difficulty can depend heavily on build matchup and player experience. He is a serious challenger to the top group for some players, but the rankings do not support presenting him as a settled second place.

7. Metyr, Mother of Fingers

Metyr also varies substantially by list: Dot Esports ranks her fifth among DLC bosses, whereas The Escapist places her in a lower tier. That makes her a matchup-sensitive pick rather than a firm member of the top five. Her placement is another reason to distinguish a focused list of major fights from one that draws candidates from a broader set of encounters.

8. Putrescent Knight and Scadutree Avatar

Putrescent Knight and Scadutree Avatar belong in the wider difficult-boss conversation, but the reviewed rankings do not establish a reliable head-to-head order for them against one another or the bosses above. Their placement is best treated as flexible: a player’s build, preparation, and familiarity with their particular attack patterns can move either fight higher on a personal list.

Why players rank the same bosses differently

  • Build matchup: A boss’s movement, defenses, and punish windows may favor some weapons or damage types over others. Bayle’s vulnerability to Scarlet Rot is one documented example.
  • Summons and challenge rules: A solo attempt is not the same test as a fight with summons, and a ranking does not automatically apply to challenge-run restrictions.
  • Scadutree Blessing level: The blessing system affects how difficult encounters feel. PowerPyx recommends collecting Scadutree Fragments and Revered Spirit Ash Blessings throughout the Realm of Shadow.
  • Progression and preparation: PowerPyx recommends level 150 or higher for the DLC. That is a guide recommendation, not a universal requirement or a guarantee that a boss will be easy.
  • List scope: A ranking limited mainly to Remembrance bosses is not measuring the same pool as one that adds optional dungeon bosses.

What to take from the ranking

If you want one answer, choose Promised Consort Radahn. Bayle is the strongest alternate for second, while Messmer is a well-supported top-three contender. After that, exact placements are less stable: Rellana and Midra have comparatively strong cases, while Gaius and Metyr show how much a player’s matchup and a list’s scope can affect the result.

Shadow of the Erdtree is an expansion and requires the Elden Ring base game. Bandai Namco and FromSoftware reported that the DLC had sold more than 5 million units worldwide within three days of its June 21, 2024 release; that is a dated launch figure, not a current sales total.
