You can stream Xbox games on a Fire TV without owning an Xbox console, but only on selected models. Xbox’s current compatibility list names four specific Fire TV devices; check the generation, since a Fire TV label by itself does not mean the device will work.
Which Fire TV devices support Xbox Cloud Gaming?
Xbox’s live Xbox on TVs compatibility page lists these four devices:
- Fire TV Stick 4K Max (1st Gen)
- Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen)
- Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen)
- Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen)
Check the model and generation before you buy or install the app. Amazon’s 2024 launch guide listed a different set, including the 2023 Fire TV Stick 4K Max and Fire TV Stick 4K. For current compatibility, use Xbox’s live list rather than carrying that older list forward. App availability can also depend on your market.
What you need to play
- A Fire TV device on Xbox’s supported list, with the Xbox app available in your market.
- A compatible controller. Amazon’s setup guide gives Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Adaptive Controller, PlayStation DualSense and DualShock 4 as examples. Check Xbox’s controller and TV guidance for current details; Bluetooth pairing alone does not establish that every controller is supported.
- An internet connection suitable for streaming. Xbox recommends high-speed internet and lists 20 Mbps downstream for consoles, PCs and tablets, alongside wired or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. That figure is guidance for those device categories, not a Fire TV performance guarantee. Actual results depend on connection, location, device and other factors.
- For most cloud-playable games, an active Game Pass subscription and a game that supports cloud play. Xbox notes that exceptions apply, and game availability varies by region, time, plan and platform. Review the current Xbox service terms for plan features and cloud-play limits rather than assuming all tiers work alike.
How to set up Xbox on a supported Fire TV
- On your Fire TV, open the Amazon Appstore and install the Xbox app.
- Open the app and sign in with your Microsoft account.
- Pair a compatible controller with the Fire TV using the device’s Bluetooth settings.
- Browse the cloud-playable games shown for your account and start a supported title. Access depends on your location, subscription terms and the game’s cloud availability.
Amazon’s launch setup guide describes this installation and sign-in flow. Its subscription and game-count details were specific to launch; check Xbox’s live service page for current terms.

Do you need an Xbox console or Game Pass?
No console is required for this setup: games stream through the Xbox app on supported Fire TV hardware. A subscription is required for most cloud games, but Xbox says exceptions apply. The exact plan, cloud-play time limits and available titles can change, so check the current Xbox service information before subscribing.
Xbox’s June 27, 2024 announcement said Game Pass Ultimate members in “over 25 countries” could play through the app on selected Fire TV devices. That was a launch-era figure, not a current country-availability count. Xbox’s 2024 announcement attributed the statement to Ashley McKissick, Corporate Vice President, Xbox Experiences and Platforms Engineering.

Will gameplay work well on your connection?
Cloud gaming streams video and inputs over your network, so a supported Fire TV and controller do not guarantee a particular image quality or responsiveness. Xbox recommends high-speed internet and identifies wired networking or 5 GHz Wi-Fi; its stated 20 Mbps downstream guidance is for consoles, PCs and tablets. Performance can vary with your connection, location and device, among other factors.
Xbox also cautions that streamed games can differ from locally installed play in ways such as video resolution, audio outputs, cloud-only saves, companion-app support and peripheral compatibility. Check the requirements of the games you intend to play as well as the service’s current regional and plan availability.

What to check before choosing a Fire TV
- Exact model: Match the full device name and generation against Xbox’s current list, not just “Fire TV Stick.”
- Local access: Confirm the Xbox app and cloud gaming are available where you live.
- Controller: Verify your specific controller is supported and can pair with your Fire TV.
- Plan and games: Check current subscription features, cloud-play limits and whether the titles you want are cloud-enabled in your region.
- Network: Prefer a stable connection; Xbox lists wired or 5 GHz Wi-Fi as options and gives connection guidance on its TV page.
