Valve’s 20% discount on the Steam Deck 256GB LCD briefly lowered its US price to $319.20 from $399 in 2025—but the offer ended October 6 at 10 a.m. PT. It may have made the original handheld a more compelling buy at the time; it is not a current price, and the LCD model has since been phased out.
What the Steam Deck LCD discount offered
Valve advertised “the discount we have on Steam Deck 256GB LCD models (20% off)” in its Steam news announcement. The promotion ran alongside the Steam Autumn Sale and ended October 6 at 10 a.m. PT (Valve). TechRadar’s contemporaneous 2025 coverage put the US sale price at $319.20, down from $399 (TechRadar).
That lower entry price is the basis for calling the promotion a potential game changer: it reduced the cost of getting Valve’s PC handheld. There is no established sales or market-impact figure showing that the discount changed demand or reshaped the handheld market, so “game changer” is a value judgment, not a demonstrated industry outcome.
What buyers got with the LCD model
Valve’s product comparison lists the LCD and OLED hardware as follows. Specifications are from Valve’s product page, accessed in 2026 (Steam Deck specifications).
#1 Best Overall
| Specification | Steam Deck LCD | Steam Deck OLED |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 7-inch LCD, 1280×800 | 7.4-inch HDR OLED |
| Maximum refresh rate | Up to 60Hz | Up to 90Hz |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 5 | Wi-Fi 6E |
| Battery capacity | 40Wh | 50Wh |
| Valve’s stated gameplay estimate | 2–8 hours, depending on content; manufacturer estimate, not an independent test | Not stated on the cited comparison page |
| Storage and configuration | 256GB NVMe storage for the discounted model | Valve lists OLED configurations; current regional models and prices should be checked in the store |
| Historical US sale price | $319.20, down from $399, as reported for the 2025 promotion by TechRadar | Not stated for the 2025 promotion |
| Current availability | Valve announced a phaseout; new availability depended on remaining stock | Valve reported OLED stock had returned in May 2026, with prices increased due to higher memory and storage costs |
The practical differences are more than screen size. OLED offers the larger HDR display, higher maximum refresh rate, newer Wi-Fi generation and greater battery capacity. LCD’s cited advantage here is its lower historical purchase price; the 2025 discount is over, and it should not be treated as a present-day comparison quote.
Why the LCD sale price is no longer a buying guide
Valve later said it was phasing out the 256GB LCD model, with availability ending after remaining stock sold out (PC Gamer reporting on Valve’s notice). A remaining new unit, if one is available in a region, and a used unit are separate from the original limited-time sale.

- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
Valve’s Steam Deck news page reported in May 2026 that OLED stock had returned and that prices had increased because of higher memory and storage costs (Valve). For a purchase today, check the official regional Steam Deck store for live stock and pricing; neither the old LCD sale price nor another region’s price establishes what is available where you are.

- Consider LCD if: you find a genuine remaining-stock or used unit at a price that makes sense for its condition and warranty situation, and you are comfortable with its 7-inch, 60Hz LCD screen and 40Wh battery.
- Consider OLED if: the 7.4-inch HDR screen, up-to-90Hz refresh rate, Wi-Fi 6E and 50Wh battery matter enough to justify its actual current price.
- Compare total suitability, not just storage: Valve says all Steam Deck models support microSD expansion, and a card is optional (Valve). Capacity, condition and current pricing still matter.
- For a TV or monitor setup: Valve says USB-C can carry display and peripheral connections and offers an official Docking Station; the dock is optional (Valve).
The sources cited here do not establish a release date or specifications for a successor. A buyer weighing an available Deck against waiting should base that choice on the current models, prices and availability rather than assuming when a next-generation system will arrive. Nor do these Steam Deck specifications establish a definitive value ranking against other handhelds.
