Book repair and digitization solve different problems: repair can stabilize the physical book, while digitization creates a copy for access. A digital copy does not preserve or restore the original, and scanning can put a fragile volume at risk. Choose based on the book’s condition and significance, how often it is used, and whether it can be handled and imaged safely.

What each preservation method does

Repair and stabilization protect the physical book

Conservation treatment addresses the book itself. A conservator may stabilize a binding feature that could cause more damage, mend a tear likely to worsen during handling, or provide support for brittle material. This preparation for safe handling is not the same as a full restoration. The Library of Congress explains its approach in Stabilization Treatments and Storage Enclosures.

Digitization improves access, not the original’s condition

Digitization captures images or text so people can consult a surrogate instead of repeatedly handling the physical volume. It does not repair the binding, stabilize pages, or replace the original. The Library of Congress advises planning around the project’s purpose, intended users, presentation, likely effects on the book, and storage and access for the resulting files in its digitization guidelines.

Preventive care may be enough

Careful handling and suitable storage can reduce risk without intervening in the book. For a damaged collector’s book that is rarely used, the Library of Congress suggests considering whether to leave it as-is, place it in a protective box, and improve its storage conditions rather than undertake unnecessary treatment.

How to decide what your book needs

Use these factors together: the book’s monetary, historical, or personal significance; the severity and progression of damage; how often it is handled; whether it can open safely for imaging; your goal (physical stability, access, or both); and the risks and costs of treatment and digitization.

Situation Likely next step Reason
Valuable or intrinsically significant book; worsening damage; frequent handling; or complicated condition Consult a trained conservator before deciding on treatment or imaging. These are circumstances the Library of Congress flags for professional advice in Repairing Your Books and its book-preservation guidance.
Damaged collector’s book that is used infrequently Consider leaving it as-is, boxing it, and improving storage. Avoiding unnecessary intervention may be preferable for an item that does not need to be handled regularly. See the Library of Congress books FAQ.
Main goal is access to the book’s text or images, and it can be imaged safely Plan digitization around the book’s condition and opening limits. Imaging can support access, but its effects on the original need to be considered first.
Weak joints, detached covers, broken spine, vulnerable tears, or brittle material Pause and seek a stabilization review before imaging; support the book and do not force it flat. Handling and pressure can cause further damage. The Library of Congress recommends a cradle for books with weak joints or restricted opening.
Unclear condition or uncertain opening limits Stop handling it and ask a conservator for an assessment. A general guide cannot establish whether a particular volume is safe to open or scan.

How to digitize without putting the book at unnecessary risk

  1. Set the purpose first. Decide who needs access, what should be captured, and how the digital files will be presented, stored, and made available.
  2. Assess the book before opening it for capture. Check for weak joints, detached covers, brittle or friable pages, tears, stuck pages, water damage, or other severe deterioration. If safe handling is uncertain, consult a conservator before proceeding.
  3. Respect the book’s natural opening limit. Do not press a book flat: pressure can break the spine or loosen or break brittle pages. A book with weak joints or restricted opening should be supported in a cradle rather than forced open.
  4. Use careful handling and suitable support throughout. The Library of Congress guidance calls for trained technicians and safe support. Some items need stabilization before they can be handled or digitized safely; severely fragile items may need more extensive treatment or may be unsuitable for imaging.

A cradle is a support, not a guarantee that an unsafe book can be scanned. If the book cannot be imaged without forcing it or risking damage, stop and seek preservation expertise. Read the Library of Congress digitization guidance for further handling considerations.

Why common DIY fixes can make damage worse

The Library of Congress warns against applying glue or self-adhesive tape to books, including tape labeled “archival.” A quick fix can complicate later conservation or cause further damage; appropriate professional conservation takes time and expertise. Do not use rubber bands to hold a damaged volume together or apply leather dressing to a leather book. For leather deterioration known as red rot, the Library of Congress suggests boxing the item to isolate it and consulting a conservator if treatment or handling is needed. Its book-repair guidance explains these cautions.

Finding help for a privately owned book

The Library of Congress does not provide conservation or digitization services for books outside its own collections. Its books FAQ points owners toward private conservators or regional conservation centers and identifies the American Institute for Conservation’s resources for finding conservators. Check a provider’s qualifications, location, fees, and availability directly before arranging work.
