Red foxes are adaptable omnivores that may live near people; the endangered Sierra Nevada red fox is a particular population, not a status shared by all foxes.
What does a fox look like?
Identification depends on location and species. In Connecticut, the red fox is typically reddish with black legs and ears and a long, bushy tail with a white tip. Silver, black and cross color phases also occur, so a red fox need not be bright red. Connecticut’s gray fox has a gray coat and lacks the red fox’s white tail tip. These are regional clues, not a worldwide identification key.
When trying to identify a fox, consider its location and habitat first, then its coat and markings and the color of its tail tip. Coat color alone is not enough to identify every fox species.
Where do foxes live?
Foxes occupy different habitats depending on species and region. Connecticut’s red foxes favor mixed forest and open fields, hunting along habitat edges; they also live in suburban and urban areas. In California, native gray foxes and kit foxes occur alongside the Sierra Nevada red fox population. Other red foxes in the state are non-native, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The Sierra Nevada red fox
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service describes the Sierra Nevada red fox (Vulpes vulpes necator) as adapted to alpine conditions, with thick fur and fuzzy paws for snowy winters. It is primarily found in mountain areas above 9,000 feet, though records exist as low as 6,000 feet. The Sierra Nevada distinct population segment was listed as endangered in 2021. The agency’s current page estimates 18 to 39 individuals remain in the wild, but does not state the estimate’s underlying survey year; it should not be read as a dated census.
The threats listed by the agency include wildfire, drought, competition from coyotes, declines in prey and hybridization with non-native foxes. This endangered listing concerns the Sierra Nevada population segment, not red foxes everywhere. The Southern Cascades segment is discussed separately by the agency.

What do foxes eat?
Red foxes are omnivores, and their diet changes with local foods and availability. Connecticut DEEP lists small mammals, squirrels, rabbits, birds and eggs, amphibians, reptiles, plants, fruit, nuts, insects, carrion and garbage among foods eaten by red foxes. Foxes may cache surplus food for later.
Are foxes dangerous?
Connecticut DEEP says red foxes seldom act aggressively toward people. That does not make a wild fox safe to approach: do not handle or feed one. Avoid an animal that appears sick or behaves abnormally, and contact the relevant local wildlife authorities for advice. Species-specific protections and response rules vary by location.

What should I do if I see a fox in my yard?
Give the fox space and do not feed it. Wildlife agencies in California and Connecticut warn against feeding foxes; repeated access to food can condition them to people. To reduce attractants, Connecticut DEEP recommends securing garbage, feeding pets indoors, cleaning up fallen fruit and bird seed, and supervising pets.
If a fox is denning in a structure or creating a conflict, contact your local wildlife agency rather than approaching or trying to remove it. California’s wildlife agency specifically warns not to fill or destroy a potential kit fox burrow and recommends consulting wildlife professionals.

How do researchers study the Sierra Nevada red fox?
Hair and scat can provide genetic information without requiring researchers to handle a fox. On a Yosemite National Park page last updated December 3, 2018, wildlife biologist Sarah Stock described a survey intended to establish baseline information about how many foxes were in Yosemite, where they occurred and how they were distributed. Stock also explained that genetic samples can help assess diversity and whether non-native foxes co-occur and hybridize. The page is dated background, not current population monitoring.
