Check the return and dispute rules before paying, keep payment on-platform, and save the listing and messages. These checks reduce risk; they cannot certify that a particular edition is genuine.
Start by checking who is selling and how you will pay
Review recent seller feedback and the comments behind the ratings, preferably across more than one source. Ratings alone are not proof: the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that reviews can be fake or misleading. Check for usable contact information, shipping charges, return conditions, and seller terms; note whether the seller is a business or a private individual. The FTC’s online marketplace guidance explains why seller and platform protections can differ.
For an auction or an older game, Nintendo advises checking a site’s reputation and buying legal, licensed products. It offers a retailer with a standard retail operation as a general rule of thumb for accountability compared with a pure auction site—not as a guarantee that a seller or item is legitimate. See Nintendo’s online auction guidance.
Before checkout, find the marketplace’s refund, return, and dispute rules. Confirm they apply to this seller and item, who qualifies, and how long you have to make a claim. The FTC notes that marketplace protections vary and deadlines can be short. Pay through the marketplace using a credit card or a secure payment service with buyer protection. Do not move payment off-platform if that would remove the marketplace’s protections; the FTC warns that wire transfers, gift cards, and cryptocurrency can be difficult to recover.

Verify the edition, contents, and item shown
Compare the listing’s edition name and included contents with the publisher’s announcement or product information for that specific release, when available. Ask the seller to confirm what is included and disclose anything missing, opened, damaged, replaced, or reproduced. There is no universal contents checklist for every collector’s edition, so compare against the exact release rather than assuming editions with similar names contain the same things.
Ask for several clear photos of the actual item, including the packaging and the contents relevant to that edition. Stock images cannot establish the item’s condition or even that the seller has it, according to the FTC. Keep the seller’s written answers and a copy of the listing so you can compare what arrives with what was promised.

- METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER Collector's Editon includes the following items:
- “Day One + Edition” retail release of METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER
- Miniature terrarium based on the iconic opening scene of Virtuous Mission where Naked Snake must recover his equipment bag snagged on a tree branch
- Includes miniature Naked Snake figurine and tree stump with hanging bag
- A recreation of the fake identification badge Naked Snake uses to break into Groznyj Grad Northeast as a scientist
Words such as “used,” “vintage,” “refurbished,” or “as is” describe a condition that needs investigation; they do not establish authenticity. The FTC cautions that these descriptions may mean an item is not in top condition. Ask what they mean for this particular copy.
Treat unusually low prices and urgency as reasons to pause
The FTC warns that an expensive item offered at a very low price might be fake. A low price is a reason to investigate further, not proof of a counterfeit: the available guidance sets no price threshold for collector’s editions, and price alone cannot establish authenticity. Ask why the price is low and seek better evidence of the item and seller before proceeding.

The European Commission advises caution when an offer seems too good to be true. It also says misleading practices that create a false sense of urgency are banned in the EU. That legal statement is specific to the EU; wherever you are, pressure to pay before you can check the listing is a good reason to stop.
Compare sellers on evidence and recourse
If more than one listing could work, compare them on the factors that determine what you can verify and what you can do if something goes wrong:

A marketplace’s policy is not an authenticity certificate. For example, eBay’s counterfeit policy prohibits counterfeit and fake goods as well as unauthorized copies, including bootleg or self-made game recordings and copied software. It also provides a way to report suspected policy violations. Those are eBay’s rules, not an independent authentication service, and other marketplaces have their own policies.

In the United States, the FTC says the INFORM Consumers Act requires online marketplaces to verify the identities of high-volume third-party sellers and make it easier to report suspicious activity. FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine described the Act as requiring marketplaces to protect consumers by verifying those sellers and facilitating reports of suspicious activity. These duties do not certify that an individual listing or collector’s edition is genuine. The FTC’s June 2023 announcement discusses marketplace obligations.

In the EU, the European Commission’s online-shopping guidance, updated July 16, 2026, describes seller identity and contact transparency, disclosure of whether a seller is private or professional, and online-shopping rights including withdrawal and legal guarantees. Applicability and exceptions depend on the seller and transaction; these EU protections should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
Quick Recap
If the item is missing, incomplete, or misrepresented
- Preserve evidence. Save the listing and seller profile, messages, payment receipt, and photos of the package and item as received.
- Contact the seller promptly. Describe what is missing or different from the listing, and keep the exchange in writing.
- Open the marketplace’s process in time. Follow its stated steps and deadlines. Do not assume that contacting the seller pauses a claim deadline.
- Ask your payment provider about a dispute. If you paid by card, the FTC advises keeping correspondence and contacting the card issuer if the purchase goes wrong. The European Commission says EU consumers may ask their bank about freezing a card or seeking a chargeback after a scam. Payment-provider deadlines may run separately from marketplace deadlines, and rights vary by location and payment method.
- Report a suspicious listing. Use the marketplace’s reporting channel; eBay, for example, accepts reports of suspected policy violations under its counterfeit policy.
- Use the relevant consumer-reporting route. U.S. consumers can report suspected dishonest businesses to ReportFraud.ftc.gov and their state attorney general. EU consumers can contact the relevant national authorities; the Commission identifies European Consumer Centres for cross-border purchases within the EU, Norway, and Iceland.
