If an Xbox disc does not give you a digital-license prompt, first check whether the console and disc qualify. The feature applies only to eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs, on a supported Xbox console with an optical disc drive, and availability is limited to select markets. Xbox 360 and original Xbox game discs are excluded. A missing prompt does not by itself mean your console needs a reset or repair.
Check whether your console and disc are eligible
- Console: It must be a supported Xbox console with an optical disc drive. A disc-free console cannot read a qualifying disc for this claim process.
- Disc generation: The feature covers eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs. Xbox 360 and original Xbox game discs do not qualify, even if a backward-compatible disc can be played on your console by the usual method.
- Market: Xbox says the feature is available in select markets, so availability may depend on your location.
See the Xbox product FAQ for the feature’s requirements and exclusions.

Use the official disc-claim check
- Sign in to the Xbox account you want to use.
- Insert the eligible-generation disc into the console’s optical drive.
- Launch the game from the disc and look for a prompt to accept a digital license.
Xbox identifies that license-acceptance prompt as the way to check whether a disc is supported. If it appears, follow the on-screen instructions. The announced feature is for claiming a license by inserting a supported disc and launching the game; Play Anywhere and cloud gaming benefits apply only to titles and services that support them. Xbox Wire’s announcement describes those limits.
If there is no digital-license prompt
Do not assume every Xbox One or Series X disc qualifies
Being from a supported generation is not enough. Microsoft says eligibility can vary because of technical, licensing, publishing, or other factors, and that the eligible set may change. A particular title or disc may therefore be unsupported even when the console and disc generation meet the basic requirements. Microsoft does not establish a universal repair for a missing prompt.

Separate disc playability from disc-to-digital eligibility
A backward-compatible Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc may work for ordinary play on a compatible console, but that does not make it eligible for this digital-license feature. Likewise, a disc that the console can read is not necessarily eligible to claim a digital license.
Record the exact message before seeking code-specific help
If the console displays an error instead of a license prompt, note the full text or code, plus your console model, whether it has a disc drive, your market, and the disc’s generation. The Xbox feature guidance explains eligibility and terms, but does not provide fixes for each possible error string. Without the exact message, a more specific remedy cannot be established.

Understand what the digital license does—and does not—mean
The license is not independent of the physical disc: Microsoft’s usage rules require continued possession of the qualifying disc and allow it to revalidate eligibility. Access may be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess that disc. Read the Microsoft Usage Rules for Digital Goods for the applicable terms.
Xbox VP Next Generation Jason Ronald wrote on August 26, 2026, that “Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature.” That broad statement is not a guarantee for every title, disc, region, or console; Xbox’s eligibility rules still apply. The announcement describes the rollout as beginning with “thousands of titles” but gives no exact count.
