On Linux, some anti-cheat games can work through Proton, but only when the game’s developer enables the relevant support. That support does not apply to Proton on PS5.
Why Proton does not run on PS5
Valve describes Steam Play as a way for some Windows-only games to potentially work on Linux. Proton is part of that Linux-and-Steam gaming setup, not a PS5 feature. Sony’s PS5 support information covers console games and compatible peripherals; it does not provide a Proton or Linux-on-PS5 method.
Sony says the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles. That figure concerns PS4 backward compatibility, not Windows games or Proton.
Can anti-cheat games work with Proton on Linux?
Sometimes, depending on the game. Valve said BattlEye and Easy Anti-Cheat offer a streamlined path for developers who choose to enable Proton support. Its Proton changelog also describes Easy Anti-Cheat support when a game has enabled a Linux module. Neither statement certifies all games using those anti-cheat systems.

For a specific game, check its current developer or publisher support information and its Steam compatibility details. Confirm that the online mode you want and the game’s official servers permit play through Proton; compatibility can differ by title and may change.

What to check before trying online play
- Platform: Proton applies to supported Linux/Steam setups, not PS5 console software.
- Game-specific enablement: The developer must enable the relevant anti-cheat support for Proton; the presence of Easy Anti-Cheat or BattlEye alone is not proof.
- Online access: Verify the publisher’s current guidance for the particular game and mode, since general Proton support does not guarantee access to official online services.
