Choose Monsters & Memories if you want a new MMORPG built around classic-era social play and are comfortable joining an unfinished Early Access game. Choose EverQuest if you want an established, actively updated game—with a free-to-play standard experience or a paid progression-server route through older content. EverQuest progression servers are not exact recreations of the 1999 game; they retain later changes and conveniences.
What is the main difference?
Monsters & Memories is a new game whose developer says it is designed to evoke classic MMORPG gameplay, social interaction, and a sense of presence in a virtual world. Its stated priorities include group play and player interdependence; those are design aims, not guarantees about how every group or player will experience it. The developer’s game description explains that approach.

EverQuest is a long-running game that continues to receive updates. Players can enter its standard live game or choose from progression servers that begin with older content and unlock more over time. Those servers offer an older-era route within an evolved game, rather than a faithful recreation of launch-era EverQuest.
How do their classic-style experiences compare?
| What matters | Monsters & Memories | EverQuest |
|---|---|---|
| Classic-era approach | The whole project is framed around classic-inspired design, with systems and content still developing. | Progression servers unlock older content over time, while retaining later changes and conveniences. |
| Social play | The developer emphasizes group play and interdependence. Its launch update describes a shared social game without instancing. | A long-running multiplayer game with different server options. Do not assume every server offers the same social experience. |
| Maturity | Early Access is the initial commercial launch, and the game remains unfinished. | An established game that continues to be updated. |
| Access and cost | Commercial Early Access; check the official site for current price and terms. | The standard game is described as free to play. Progression-server access requires All Access; check current membership terms and price. |
What should you know about Monsters & Memories Early Access?
The developer scheduled Early Access to begin October 1, 2026, and describes it as the initial launch—not a head start. Since that date has passed, the schedule alone does not confirm current live-service status or price. Check the Early Access overview and Early Access FAQ for the developer’s launch terms.

Early Access means the game is not complete. In its launch-preparation update, the developer says development will continue and warns that the first days or weeks may be rough, as can happen with a new MMO launch. That uncertainty may suit players who want to join a developing shared world, but it is a poor fit if you expect a finished, predictable experience from day one.
What does an EverQuest progression server actually offer?
Progression servers begin with a subset of content—usually the original zones—and open additional content over time. Daybreak explicitly distinguishes them from a “Classic” server that would reproduce EverQuest as it existed at its March 1999 launch. Progression servers retain later additions, including maps, configurable UI, removal of “hell levels,” and removal of race- and class-based experience penalties. See the official EverQuest progression-server guide for how the model works.
Access to those servers requires All Access, according to the same guide. The membership page describes All Access benefits and says fees recur until canceled; it also reserves the right to change fees and benefits. Check current terms before subscribing.
Which game fits your preferences?
Choose Monsters & Memories if…
- You want a new world explicitly pursuing classic-inspired group interdependence and social interaction.
- You are willing to play during Early Access, while the game is unfinished and launch conditions may be unstable.
- You prefer the idea of a shared, non-instanced world described by the developer.
Choose EverQuest if…
- You want an established game that is still being updated.
- You want to decide between the standard free-to-play experience and a progression server focused on older content.
- You accept that a progression server includes later changes and requires All Access, rather than reproducing the 1999 launch experience.
What cannot be settled by the available facts?
There is no reliable comparative figure here for population, retention, player satisfaction, performance, or which game has the stronger social community. The choice is therefore about the experience each game offers and the trade-offs you accept—not a proven ranking of which one is more popular or better populated. EverQuest’s official site describes it as free to play and lists ongoing updates, including in its homepage and July 2026 producer’s letter; those facts do not establish current server populations.
