How to Track Your Progress in Long SNES RPGs

Pair your SNES RPG’s save file with a short session note and a separate checklist for optional goals, so you can pick up where you left off without a sprawling walkthrough.

Use the game’s save file to preserve your actual progress, then add a brief session note to remember what you were doing and what you plan to do next. Keep optional goals in a separate checklist. This combination makes it easier to resume without turning a first playthrough into a spoiler-heavy walkthrough.

What should you record when you stop playing?

At the end of a session, make a normal in-game save, then jot down only the context you may not remember later. A useful note takes about a minute and includes:

  • Date or session number.
  • Current location, chapter, or major hub.
  • The last story event you saw.
  • Your next objective, or the question you were trying to answer.
  • Any unresolved lead you want to revisit.

Keep the note grounded in what the game has already shown you. “Ask the innkeeper about the eastern road” is more spoiler-light than writing down a future plot reveal from a guide.

How should you use save files?

The save file is the record of the game’s playable state; your note records your memory and intentions. When the game offers multiple slots, use one for your regular progress and consider keeping another before a major choice or long sequence. Follow the game’s own saving rules: manual save access varies by title, and some games offer both map-screen saving and designated save points.

#1 Best Overall
900 in 1 Multi-Game Cartridge for SNES 16-Bit Game Console
  • 900 IN 1 GAME CARTRIDGE: Includes 900 built-in classic games, offering endless entertainment in one convenient cartridge.
  • COMPATIBLE WITH SNES: Designed specifically for 16-bit Super Nintendo consoles, ensuring seamless plug-and-play performance.
  • MASSIVE GAME LIBRARY: Enjoy a huge variety of genres including action, adventure, sports, and puzzle games all in one package.
  • EASY TO USE: Simply insert the cartridge into your SNES console and select from the on-screen game menu to start playing instantly.
  • GREAT FOR RETRO GAMING: Perfect for fans of classic 16-bit gaming, bringing back nostalgic favorites and discovering new ones.

For example, the Chrono Trigger SNES instruction booklet says the game supports three save files and describes saving from the map screen as well as at save points. It specifically advises saving at the End of Time save point. The Final Fantasy III SNES manual transcription describes a battery-backed cartridge with up to three saved files. These examples show why it is worth checking the manual for the particular game rather than assuming every SNES RPG handles saving the same way.

How do you resume without losing time?

  1. Load your most recent in-game save.
  2. Read your last session note to recover the immediate goal and any lead you meant to follow up.
  3. Check the game’s status or subscreen for current party, location, currency, play time, or other useful state the title displays.
  4. Decide whether to continue the recorded objective or revise it based on what you see in the game.

The Final Fantasy III SNES manual transcription lists play time, steps, gold, party information, and a save command on its subscreen. Those fields can help you orient yourself, but they will not explain why you were traveling somewhere or remind you of a personal side-quest goal. That is what the session note is for.

  • 8GB Memory Card Included: Comes with an 8GB memory card (FAT16/FAT32) supporting cards up to 32GB and ROMs up to 48Mbit (6MB) for seamless play on most SNES titles.
  • Ready to Use: Sturdy ABS shell in translucent purple with stable plug-in detection; just insert and play, no configuration needed.

How can you track side quests without spoiling the story?

Keep optional completion goals separate from the quick session log. Add an item only when it matters to your run: a side quest, an area to revisit, a missable item, or a collection category. This keeps everyday notes short while giving completion-minded players somewhere to track progress.

For a first playthrough, record leads the game has revealed and phrase them as reminders or questions. On a replay or completion run, separate checklist sections for story, side quests, collectibles, and missables. Avoid relying on a single completion percentage unless the game or checklist defines precisely what it counts.

A Chrono Trigger 100% checklist by BrianRetro, listed as updated December 6, 2022, organizes goals such as equipment, stat tabs, secrets, and side quests. It is an example of a category-based checklist, not an official standard for what counts as 100%.

Another example is the Pixel Guides Chrono Trigger completion checklist, updated September 1, 2026. Its reference totals include 7 playable characters, 32 body armors, 24 helmets, and 47 map entries, among other categories. Those figures describe that guide’s dataset; they are not an official completion percentage and do not mean every category is required.

Should you use a walkthrough or make your own checklist?

Approach Best for Trade-off
Save slots plus a one-line note Most players who want to resume smoothly Low effort, but it does not inventory every optional task.
Personal checklist Players with specific completion goals More thorough, but you must decide what “done” means.
Published guide or game-specific checklist Players who want pre-organized locations and goals May reveal spoilers, reflect a particular version, or leave out goals you care about.

For a first run, a short personal note is often enough. Consult a walkthrough only when you want help with a specific obstacle or have chosen to pursue optional content; a full guide can reveal information you would rather discover in play.

Are printed RPG guides useful for tracking?

A game-specific guide can provide maps and a route reference, but check its edition and language before relying on it. Square Enix’s catalog lists a Japanese Super Famicom Dragon Quest III official guidebook, released January 24, 1997. The listing describes a 240-page B6 book with maps of towns, castles, and dungeons, adventure advice, a fold-out world map, and an adventure flowchart. It is a Japanese-edition example, not a general SNES RPG guide; the listing alone does not establish current retailer availability.
