Metaphor: ReFantazio is the best first stop if you want another stylish, party-based turn-based RPG after Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. For a closer match to one particular part of the experience, choose Sea of Stars for timed combat inputs, Persona 5 Royal for a long, highly stylized adventure, or Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster for an emotional classic. None is a sequel or a precise substitute: each carries over different parts of what made Expedition 33 distinctive.

What to look for after Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Expedition 33 mixes menu-based turns with real-time reactions: players can dodge, parry and counter, enter rhythm-based attack combos, and free-aim certain attacks. Its Belle Époque-inspired fantasy world and the expeditioners’ quest to break the Paintress’ cycle of death give its combat a strong visual and emotional frame. Party building also matters, with gear, stats, skills and synergies shaping character-specific builds. Bandai Namco’s game description identifies it as a turn-based RPG with real-time mechanics, released April 24, 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

That combination makes “similar” a matter of preference. Some follow-ups offer reactive timing; others share the striking presentation, character focus or tactical party combat while using more conventional turns. The recommendations below are organized by what you want to carry forward, not by how closely they reproduce every feature.

Closest overall match: Metaphor: ReFantazio

Start here if what you want is a contemporary party RPG that combines a distinct visual identity with turn-based combat. A comparison of the two games describes Metaphor: ReFantazio as the closest blend of painted art and party-based turn combat. That makes it the strongest all-around follow-up for someone drawn to Expedition 33 as both a stylish production and a character-driven RPG. GameGeeker’s comparison supports this as a preference-based recommendation, not a claim that the games share the same combat or story.

Choose by what you want more of

For a long, sharply stylized turn-based RPG: Persona 5 Royal

Persona 5 Royal is a good fit if you want another substantial RPG whose visual presentation is central to its appeal. It is an expanded version of Persona 5, with quality-of-life and gameplay adjustments and additional characters, according to GamesRadar’s RPG roundup. It offers a full turn-based RPG experience, but should be chosen for its own stylized world and scope—not because it recreates Expedition 33’s real-time defensive inputs.

For timed hits and blocks: Sea of Stars

Choose Sea of Stars if the satisfying part of turn-based combat for you is pressing a button at the right moment. Its timed hits and blocks make encounters more hands-on than standard menu turns. The trade-off is a warmer tone and lighter difficulty than Expedition 33, so it is a better match for the rhythm of reacting than for the same emotional weight or challenge. GameGeeker’s comparison highlights those differences.

  • Discover a Beautiful World - Climb aboard an airship or boat and traverse this handcrafted, dark fairytale world. From the shining kingdom of Crystallis to the slums of St. Clarity, discover each unique location and shape its future

For an emotional classic: Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster

If the story’s mortality themes mattered most, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster is a worthwhile classic to consider. The comparison connects Final Fantasy X to Expedition 33 through its mortality-focused story and notes that its combat uses more traditional turns and its pacing feels older. Go in for the emotional lineage rather than modern reactive combat. GameGeeker’s comparison discusses the connection.

For strategic battles and a distinctive look: OCTOPATH TRAVELER II

OCTOPATH TRAVELER II is the pick if you want battle systems to take center stage. Its turn-based combat uses Break and Boost timing, and its signature art direction gives it a strong identity. The important difference is its anthology structure: it is not built around one continuous central party story in the same way. GameGeeker’s comparison points to its combat and presentation as the main attractions.

For an approachable fantasy journey: Dragon Quest XI S

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition suits players who want a broad fantasy adventure with companions and approachable turn-based combat. GamesRadar describes it as an open-zone journey; it is a genre recommendation rather than a close match for Expedition 33’s tone or reactive combat. See GamesRadar’s RPG roundup for its description.

Why character-specific play matters

One of Expedition 33’s strengths is that party members are not simply interchangeable: each has a distinct playstyle, mechanics and skill tree. In an interview with Xbox Wire, CEO and Creative Director Guillaume Broche explained: “We didn’t want the game to just be a pretty face”, he told us. “We wanted it to be like a game that feels like a real game. So every character has their own playstyle and you can really play them in a lot of different ways – but they also feel very different from each other, and they all have their unique mechanics and their unique skill tree.”

If differentiated characters and build choices are what you want next, prioritize RPGs with battles and party roles you enjoy experimenting with—not just a similar art style. Metaphor: ReFantazio is the broadest recommendation in this list; OCTOPATH TRAVELER II leans particularly toward strategic combat, while the other picks answer different preferences.
