Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with Xbox’s Leaving soon collection, note each game’s listed departure date, then compare the time you have with a HowLongToBeat estimate for your chosen finish: main story, main story plus extras, or completionist. Put feasible games with the nearest deadlines first. If a game will not fit, decide early whether to aim for a shorter finish, leave it for later, or buy it to keep playing after it leaves.
Find the games that are actually leaving
Open the Xbox Game Pass catalog and choose Leaving soon. Xbox presents this as a collection of games leaving in the next two weeks, but the catalog warns that titles and availability vary over time, by region, plan, and platform. Treat the collection in your own account as the live reference; a list seen elsewhere may not match what you can play.

For each game you might want to finish, write down its displayed departure date and confirm that it is available on your plan and device. Xbox has described departure notifications in its apps and game hubs, but do not assume every title will have the same lead time or that an older interface guide reflects the current app. Check the catalog and any in-app notifications again as the date approaches.
Choose what “finished” means
Before looking at a playtime number, decide what outcome would feel complete to you. A main-story run, a run that includes extra content, and a completionist run can require very different amounts of time. Xbox’s game hubs surface HowLongToBeat community completion data to help compare these goals; Xbox product manager Dylan Meade described it as a way to compare playtime with community-sourced data in the February 26, 2024 Xbox Wire announcement.

#1 Best Overall
- THE PERFECT GAMING GIFT — Buy an XBOX Gift Card for yourself or a friend and let them choose the games, add‑ons, subscriptions, and accessories they want most.
- USE FOR GAMES & CONTENT — Redeem for thousands of digital XBOX games, from backward compatible classics to the latest new releases, plus DLC and in‑game currency.
- GAME PASS READY — Apply your balance toward XBOX Game Pass Ultimate to play new titles on day one* and access a library of hundreds of high‑quality console games.
- PRE‑ORDER & PRE‑INSTALL GAMES — Use your balance to pre‑order and pre‑download upcoming titles so you’re ready to play the moment they launch.
- NO FEES OR EXPIRATION — XBOX Gift Cards never expire and have no service fees, so your balance is ready whenever you are.
- Main story: use the main-story estimate if finishing the central campaign is enough for you.
- Main story plus extras: use an estimate for added content if side activities or optional missions are part of your goal.
- Completionist: choose this only if you want to pursue a near-total or full completion run and have time for it.
These are community estimates, not a guaranteed finish time for your play style. Difficulty, exploration, retries, familiarity with the genre, and how much optional content you pursue can all affect your pace. Do not use the largest estimate as the minimum if your actual goal is simply to finish the story.
Build a queue you can realistically finish
Xbox PC game hubs and game cards have included HowLongToBeat data and departure information; Xbox has also described sorting PC games by HowLongToBeat. Feature presentation can change, so check the game hub or details in the current app rather than relying on a fixed menu path. Record the same four details for every candidate:

- Game and departure date shown in your current catalog.
- Finish target you chose: main story, extras, or completionist.
- Matching estimated hours from the game’s HowLongToBeat information.
- Realistic hours available in your calendar before the departure date.
Then compare the estimated time with the hours you can genuinely play, not with an idealized schedule. Put the closest departure dates first, but prioritize only games that seem feasible. If several fit and you have limited time, give precedence to the one you most want to finish and the one with the nearest deadline. This is a planning approach, not an Xbox formula or a guarantee of completion.
What to do when the estimate does not fit
Set a shorter finish line
If the completionist estimate is out of reach, ask whether the main story would still be satisfying. Switch to that goal and plan from its estimate rather than trying to rush every optional activity.

Defer the game
If even the main-story estimate does not fit—or you do not want to hurry—let the game go for now. Avoid sacrificing the experience by treating a catalog deadline as an obligation.
Buy it to continue after removal
Xbox says members may be able to buy a departing game at a discount, allowing them to keep playing after it leaves Game Pass. Check the listing in your own store for the specific game’s current availability, price, region, and terms; the discount and offer are not universal. Xbox’s Game Pass membership guidance also describes buying games before they leave, but its interface details date to 2020.

Keep cloud play in perspective
Cloud gaming can make it easier to play on a supported device, but it does not extend a game’s time in the Game Pass catalog. Xbox announced on September 3, 2026 that monthly cloud gaming allowances would begin in November 2026: 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 for Premium, and 5 for Essential. Those are announced monthly cloud-hour allowances, not estimates for completing games. Xbox said availability and purchase options may vary by market, and that pricing and further details would be shared before the change. Check Xbox’s announcement for current terms before relying on cloud play or an allowance.
