Runes are characters in historical writing systems used by Germanic-speaking peoples. They were carved on objects and monuments, and there was more than one runic alphabet: the 24-character Elder Futhark came before the 16-character Younger Futhark associated with the Viking Age. A rune transcription can show which signs were written without making the older language—or the inscription’s meaning—immediately clear.
What are runes?
Runes are the signs of several historical writing systems used among Germanic-speaking peoples. The best-known sequence is called futhark, named for its first six characters. The Swedish History Museum explains the name and describes runes as angular forms suited to carving into wood: Swedish History Museum: Runes.
For a Scandinavian history overview, it helps to distinguish three broad stages: Elder Futhark, Viking-Age Younger Futhark, and expanded medieval runes. Their names and dates describe different historical rune rows, not interchangeable versions of one unchanged alphabet.
How did the rune rows change?
The University of Copenhagen gives these approximate periods for the main Scandinavian sequence. Boundaries are broad institutional period labels, not exact dates that apply universally to every inscription.

Why did the Viking-Age row have fewer signs?
Younger Futhark had 16 characters, fewer than Elder Futhark’s 24. The Viking Ship Museum notes that the Viking-Age row did not have separate runes for every sound in the language. As a result, a written sign could represent more than one possible sound, and readers rely on linguistic and inscriptional context when interpreting it: Viking Ship Museum: The Viking Age alphabet.

What can a runic inscription tell us?
Runes were not limited to grand stone monuments. The Swedish History Museum lists wood, stone, and horn, as well as objects such as combs and weapons, among the places runes appear. Inscriptions can preserve names, historical events, accounts of long journeys, and sometimes poetry. They offer evidence about what people chose to record, though the surviving text may be brief or difficult to interpret.
The scale of surviving material depends on what is being counted. The Swedish History Museum reports about 2,500 runestones found in Sweden, roughly 1,300 of them in Uppland; those figures concern Swedish runestones, not all runic inscriptions or stones across Scandinavia. How is a rune inscription read?
Reading usually involves more than recognizing signs. It is useful to separate two stages:
- Transliteration represents the runic characters with modern letters or another agreed system. It is a way of recording signs, not necessarily a translation.
- Translation interprets the language represented by those signs. That can be difficult when spellings, sounds, and word use have changed over centuries.
The Swedish History Museum cautions that “Texts written in runes can be difficult to read,” and notes that even decipherable symbols do not guarantee that the language is understood. A readable transliteration should therefore not be mistaken for a transparent translation.

Are runes the same as fixed mystical symbols?
Historically, runes are first of all characters in writing systems. The institutional sources cited here document their forms, chronology, and use in inscriptions; they do not establish a universal mystical meaning for each rune or settle how historical practices relate to contemporary rune-reading systems. Treat rune-by-rune meaning charts as modern or tradition-specific interpretations unless they are supported by specialist evidence.
