Choose a mod by the change you want
“Graphics mod” can mean several different things: more detailed textures and models, different lighting, or a change to the final image’s color and effects. Those are not interchangeable. Start with the visual result you want, then confirm the mod supports your edition and renderer.

Lighting mods: Better Vanilla Lighting Changes and Light Rewrite
The Next Gen 4.04 Essential Mods List lists Better Vanilla Lighting Changes and Light Rewrite as lighting options. They are candidates to compare if you want to alter how environments and light sources look without treating the change as a general texture upgrade. The guide is scoped to 4.04; it does not establish that either option works with Remastered or every later patch.
Use each mod’s current Nexus page as the authority for supported game version, installation instructions, and compatibility patches. A curated guide can help identify options, but it cannot substitute for the individual mod’s current requirements.

Color grading and post-processing: RenoDX
RenoDX is a separate choice from a lighting overhaul. Its author describes changes to the processing order of effects such as bloom, sunshafts, blur, and grading. That makes it relevant if you want to change the rendered image rather than simply add asset detail.
- Renderer: RenoDX requires DX12, according to its mod page; the 4.04 guide also marks it for DX12.
- Other setup: The guide names ReShade as a requirement and says RenoDX is for players with an HDR monitor.
- Display results: HDR and SDR behavior should not be assumed to look identical across displays. Confirm the author’s current setup notes before installing.
RenoDX is therefore not a universal color improvement for every Witcher 3 player. If you do not meet its renderer and display requirements, choose another approach rather than installing it on the assumption that it is a general-purpose preset.

Asset detail: HD Reworked Project and the Remastered distinction
HD Reworked Project improves the appearance of assets: its author describes thousands of changes to textures, models, materials, and other elements, with the aim of adding detail and consistency. It is not primarily a lighting or color-grading mod. The project’s Nexus page describes the mod for its supported game edition.
That distinction matters because the latest release context differs from the 4.04 mod guide. CD Projekt Red’s Next-Gen update notes identify HD Reworked Project as community-made or community-inspired and separately list visual changes including environmental lighting, sky textures, vegetation and water, mesh and selected VFX improvements, 4K character textures, and higher-resolution character self-shadowing. Those are historical notes for the Next-Gen update, not a complete specification of Remastered.

PC Gamer reported on August 27, 2026, that the HD Reworked Project creator’s work would be officially available in Remastered and that the mod would no longer be needed there (PC Gamer’s Remastered coverage). Treat that as release reporting, not a substitute for current official release notes or mod-page compatibility details.

It may help you identify a coordinated visual direction, but check the linked components, dependencies, and compatibility notes individually; the setup should not be read as one standalone preset that works on every build. Check compatibility before installing
- Identify your game build. Confirm whether you are on Remastered, Next Gen 4.04, or an older release. The Essential Mods List cited here is specifically for 4.04, not proof of Remastered compatibility.
- Match the effect to the mod. Use asset reworks for surface detail, lighting mods for scene illumination, and post-processing tools for grading and effects.
- Check renderer-specific files. The guide distinguishes DX11 and DX12 in some entries—for example, it lists separate renderer files for Novigrad Sewers Lighting Improved. Do not reuse a file or installation path across renderers unless that mod’s current instructions say to.
- Read dependencies and patches. The guide includes a compatibility patch for using Brothers in Arms with HD Reworked Project. Check the current pages for required patches before combining mods.
- Review the author’s installation notes. Confirm supported versions, required tools, and any conflicts on the individual mod page before applying files.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—rank
The cited sources describe mod features and setup requirements, but do not provide comparable image-quality scores or FPS measurements for the lighting and color options. There is no grounded performance ranking here: results would need to be measured on the same game build, hardware, and settings.
