The picks are useful as informed opinions, not guarantees. Recent BBC Sport reviews show that pundits can miss the champion, while accuracy also depends on whether you are judging the winner, the top four or the exact finishing order.
Why do pundits make title predictions?
The clearest evidence is the format itself. BBC Sport asks pundits to forecast the top four before a season and later compares those selections with the final standings. Its previews also ask about European qualification, so the exercise is broader than naming a champion. That creates a forward-looking topic for readers and a result that can be checked when the season ends.
It is reasonable to infer that a debatable forecast gives a preview a clear angle and makes a later review possible. But the published examples do not establish what motivates individual pundits, or show that they choose controversial teams for attention, betting value or any other private incentive. Without a direct statement, those motives should not be attributed to them.
How reliable are pundit predictions?
They vary by season and by the measure used. A pick for the champion is a single-outcome forecast; correctly naming all four top-four clubs, getting their order right, and predicting match results are different tasks. The examples below illustrate misses and successes, not a comprehensive accuracy ranking of pundits across broadcasters or seasons.

Recent BBC Sport season reviews
| Season reviewed | Pundit and model results reported by BBC Sport | What the example shows |
|---|---|---|
| 2020–21 and 2021–22 (review published 2022) | For 2021–22, 13 of 20 pundits picked Manchester City, the eventual champion. None had picked Liverpool, the 2020–21 champion, before that season. Two pundits ordered the 2021–22 top three correctly; none named all four top-four clubs. | A strong consensus favourite can be easier to identify than the full top four or its order. BBC Sport’s 2022 review. |
| 2024–25 (review published 26 May 2025) | None of 30 pundits picked Liverpool as champion; Stephen Warnock and Fara Williams placed Liverpool second. Opta’s pre-season forecast gave Manchester City an 82.2% title probability and ranked Liverpool third. The model selected all four eventual top-four teams, with two in the correct positions. | The 82.2% was Opta’s probability for that pre-season forecast, not a guarantee or a general accuracy rate. Liverpool won. BBC Sport’s 2025 review. |
| 2025–26 (review published 25 May 2026) | Of 33 pundits, 21 picked Liverpool to win, but Arsenal were champions; six pundits had selected Arsenal. No pundit correctly named more than two of the actual top-four clubs. Opta’s forecast favoured Liverpool at 28.5%; a poll of thousands of BBC readers also selected Liverpool, while the BBC’s AI table forecast selected Manchester City. | The predictions were based on squads as they stood on 14 August, before the transfer window closed. Opta’s 28.5% was a probability in that season’s forecast, not a general record. This one-season comparison does not establish that pundits, readers or models systematically outperform one another. BBC Sport’s 2026 review. |
These BBC exercises are snapshots from one publisher, not a multi-year audit of every pundit. The cited reviews do not provide long-run accuracy scores for each named forecaster or a series showing how well their probabilities are calibrated.
Match forecasts are not title forecasts
A 2021 peer-reviewed study by David Butler, Robert Butler and John Eakins examined Premier League match predictions across three seasons. Its abstract reports that former professional players forecast better than laypeople, finds partial support for greater crowd precision, and says pundits made positive returns within the study’s betting framework while crowd and lay forecasts generated losses. Those results concern match outcomes and that study’s betting setup; they do not show that pundits reliably pick the season champion. A positive return under a particular framework is also not the same as a high raw hit rate. The University College Cork study record does not state the exact sample size, odds, return magnitude or full scoring method.

What can the league table tell you?
In a Premier League analysis of 26 full seasons, from 1999–2000 through 2024–25, football writer Alex Keble reported that 12 of 26 leaders after ten matchweeks went on to win the title (46%). At the same checkpoint, 21 of the 26 eventual champions were in the top three (81%). The eventual winners also came from second place four times, third five times, fourth once, fifth twice and sixth twice.
Those historical figures show that early standings contain useful information without settling the outcome. They are base rates for league positions, not a direct test of pundit accuracy. See the Premier League’s historical analysis.

How to judge a prediction fairly
Before calling a pundit—or a model—accurate, check what was forecast and how it was graded. A champion pick cannot be compared fairly with a match prediction or a top-four ranking using a single, unspecified measure.
- Target: Was the forecast for the champion, top-four membership, exact final order or individual match outcomes?
- Timing: Was it made before the season, before the transfer window closed, at a mid-season checkpoint or just before a match?
- Scoring: Was success an exact hit, a near-miss points system, rank error, probability calibration or betting return? These measures answer different questions.
- Sample: How many pundits, models, seasons or matches were included?
- Baseline: Is there a favourite, market or crowd comparison using the same target, timing and scoring rule?
Without those details, a handful of visible successes or misses can illustrate uncertainty, but cannot establish a stable ranking of who forecasts best.
