For a New Zealand day hike, pack a warm layer, a hooded waterproof shell, suitable footwear, sun protection, food and water, and the navigation and emergency essentials—even if the weather looks settled at the start. Keep spare clothing dry and accessible, check conditions for the actual route, and be prepared to change your plans. This checklist is a baseline for walks under eight hours, not a packing list for an overnight tramp or technical alpine route.

What to pack for a New Zealand day hike

DOC’s day-hike checklist is intended for walks under eight hours. Adjust it for the route’s length, terrain, exposure, forecast and the consequences of getting delayed. A short formed track, a long exposed hike and a snowy alpine route call for different preparations.

Clothing and weather protection

  • Hooded waterproof, windproof jacket: Carry it even when the sky is clear, and keep it near the top of your pack so you can put it on before you get soaked. Consider waterproof overtrousers for prolonged wet, windy or exposed conditions; they are not necessary for every day walk.
  • Moisture-managing base layer: Choose wool or polypropylene. Add leggings if conditions call for them, and wear quick-drying shorts or trousers.
  • Insulating mid layer: Take a long-sleeved wool or polar-fleece top. Wear it or keep it handy depending on temperature and how hard you are walking.
  • Warm hat and gloves: Bring both even if the start feels mild. Also carry a sun hat and sunglasses.
  • Suitable footwear and socks: Choose sturdy footwear with comfortable tread for the track and conditions. Hiking boots with ankle support may suit some routes; other sturdy footwear may suit others. Wool or polypropylene socks are practical options.

Avoid cotton and denim as insulating layers in wet conditions: when wet, they pull heat from the body. Wool, fleece and polypropylene retain warmth more effectively. Down insulation also loses insulating properties when wet.

Pack, food and water

  • Day pack with a waterproof liner: Put spare layers in a dry bag or inside the liner. Keep rain and warm layers where you can reach them without unpacking everything.
  • Water: DOC’s checklist suggests a 1–2 litre drink bottle. That is a guide, not a guarantee of enough for every hike; account for heat, exertion, route length and whether water is available.
  • Lunch and snacks: Take food for the outing, plus extra high-energy food in case you are delayed.
  • Sun protection: Carry sunscreen, a sun hat and sunglasses.
  • Other useful essentials: Personal medication, rubbish bag and toilet paper. Insect repellent can also be useful.

Navigation, communication and emergency items

  • A map and a fully charged mobile phone. Cell coverage is not guaranteed; consider a suitable backup communication device for your route.
  • A basic first-aid kit, emergency torch or head torch with spare batteries, survival blanket and whistle.

DOC lists these items as part of its day-hike preparation guidance. What is suitable for navigation and backup communication depends on the route; do not assume a phone will work everywhere.

How to dress for changing weather

Use three functional layers: a base layer to manage moisture, an insulating mid layer for warmth, and a windproof, waterproof shell to protect against the elements. Keep spare layers dry and accessible. Add insulation before you become chilled when stopping, and put on rain protection before rain soaks your inner layers.

NZ Mountain Safety Council (NZMSC) advises: “Always take a rain jacket and warm clothes, even on a short walk, and a little extra food on an overnight trip.” The extra-food point is especially relevant if an outing could run longer than planned.

How to prepare for changing weather conditions on a hike or tramp

  1. Check the forecast for the actual destination. Look at local mountain or rural forecasts, watches and warnings—not just the forecast for a nearby town. Recheck close to departure.
  2. Check track information. Review current route conditions and consider how rain, wind or other forecast hazards could affect the track.
  3. Make a realistic plan. Choose a route within the group’s ability and leave enough daylight. Tell a trusted person where you are going and when you expect to return.
  4. Keep monitoring conditions. Rain can raise river levels and make tracks slippery; wind can be particularly hazardous on exposed ridges. Have an alternative plan and be ready to shorten the walk, turn back or postpone it if conditions are unsuitable.

DOC’s spring advice dated 30 September 2026 also highlights warm layers, a quality rain jacket, warm hat and gloves, sun protection, emergency shelter, extra food, a torch and emergency communications device. It warns that conditions can deteriorate quickly and recommends checking gear before setting off after a long break. Forecasts, warnings and track conditions can change, so check the latest information for the location and date of your trip.

When a day-hike checklist is not enough

Overnight or multi-day tramp

An overnight trip needs provisions beyond a day-walk list, including suitable sleeping and cooking equipment and enough dry clothing. Plan for the route and possible delays rather than treating a day pack as adequate.

Snow, ice or technical alpine terrain

A normal day-hike checklist does not make a technical route safe. Snow and ice routes require appropriate skills, forecasts and specialist equipment. DOC’s Taranaki Maunga summit guidance describes winter conditions requiring mountaineering experience and equipment, including crampons, an ice axe and helmet; an avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel are needed where appropriate. Do not carry this gear as though it were standard equipment for an ordinary walk, or assume ordinary hiking layers are enough for an alpine route.

Taranaki Maunga: a route-specific temperature estimate

For Taranaki Maunga only, DOC says that on a fine day the summit can be at least 20°C colder than New Plymouth and 10°C colder than the track start, with another 2°C deducted for every 10 km/h of wind. This is DOC’s estimate for that route, not a general rule for New Zealand mountains.
