How to Tell Whether a Video Game Uses AI-Generated Content

A Steam AI disclosure can point to generated game content, but it is a developer statement—not an audit. Learn what to check and how to judge the evidence.

Start with the game’s store page: on Steam, look for its AI Generated Content Disclosure. Then check what the developer says was generated, when it was generated, and whether the statement identifies specific content. A disclosure is useful evidence, not an independent audit of every asset; no disclosure is not proof that no AI was used.

How to check whether a game uses AI-generated content

  1. Check the store page. On Steam, find the AI Generated Content Disclosure. Steam asks developers to disclose AI-created content that ships with the game and is consumed by players, including artwork, sound, narrative, and localization. Steamworks Content Survey
  2. See whether it is pre-generated or live-generated. Steam calls content made during development and included in the shipped game “Pre-Generated.” “Live-Generated” content is created by AI while the game runs. For live generation, Steam asks developers to describe safeguards against illegal outputs. Steamworks Content Survey
  3. Read the scope, not just the label. Steam’s disclosure section concerns AI used to create content that ships with the game and is consumed by players; it says efficiency gains from AI development tools are not its focus. The label therefore is not a complete inventory of every AI tool used behind the scenes. Steamworks Content Survey: AI content
  4. Cross-check official evidence. Look for a dated statement from the developer or publisher, update notes, credits, or official support material. For a claim about one image, voice line, or passage, check whether the evidence names that content rather than making a broad claim about the whole game.
  5. Record what the evidence actually establishes. Note the storefront and policy date, the content type, whether generation happens before release or during play, and whether the claim is an official disclosure, another developer statement, or an inference.

What a disclosure does—and does not—prove

A Steam disclosure is a developer’s account of covered content, not a public forensic certificate for each asset. Valve says prerelease review evaluates AI-generated output under the same rules as non-AI content; that describes content review, not independent verification of provenance. Keep conclusions narrow. “The developer disclosed AI-generated store art” is more supportable than “the game is AI-generated.” A disclosure may concern a limited asset or marketing material and does not say how much AI contributed. Likewise, an absent label cannot prove that no AI was used, particularly on storefronts without an equivalent disclosure requirement.

Store policies differ and can change. A UK Parliament Commons Library briefing dated January 20, 2026 reported that Steam required disclosure of pre-generated or live-generated AI content, while the Epic Games Store did not require a similar developer disclosure at that time. Check each storefront’s current policy before treating a missing label as meaningful. UK Parliament Commons Library briefing

Can you tell from the game’s artwork or other content?

Visual irregularities or player suspicions can be a reason to investigate, but the policy and research sources cited here do not establish a reliable visual checklist or detector that can conclusively authenticate a game’s assets. Treat appearance-based judgments as suspicions unless corroborated by a traceable statement or other evidence tied to the particular content. Do not infer that one questionable image proves the entire game uses generated art. Flockbay’s Steam disclosure analysis

What Steam disclosure figures can tell you

A Flockbay analysis reported that 35.04% of sampled Steam releases from January through August 2026 carried some AI disclosure. Its sample consisted of 16,968 store pages out of 62,612 games released on Steam since July 1, 2023; figures were stated as of August 26, 2026. This was a seeded random sample, not a census. The percentage describes disclosures found in that sample, not the share of games actually using AI. Flockbay cautions that its data cannot measure undisclosed use, the amount of AI in an individual game, or whether a disclosure refers to in-game material rather than store-page marketing. A careful way to describe what you found

When posting or discussing a claim, name the evidence and limit the wording to its scope. For example: “The Steam page discloses pre-generated AI content” reports a disclosure; “the developer’s dated update says this character portrait was generated with AI” identifies a specific statement. If the basis is only a visual impression, say it appears suspicious rather than presenting it as confirmed. Steam’s own description captures the distinction: “Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus of this section. Instead, it is concerned with the use of AI in creating content that ships with your game, and is consumed by players.” — Valve / Steamworks, Content Survey, accessed October 4, 2026.
