As of October 4, 2026, World of Warcraft: Forever is announced but not yet playable. Blizzard has scheduled it to launch November 4. If you want original WoW content that stays in its original era, look at Classic Era; if you mean the Anniversary PvE or PvP realms, those have already progressed to Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary. The right choice depends on which version of “Classic” you mean—and whether you want a fixed era or a world Blizzard says will receive new stories and updates.

What is WoW Forever?

Blizzard describes World of Warcraft: Forever as a new permanent home alongside modern and Classic WoW. Its announced setting is after the events of Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom and before Molten Core. Players will return to the original continents, adventure to level 60, and continue through new stories, experiences, and updates inspired by player feedback.

Blizzard announced a global launch for November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PDT, with beta beginning September 17. The launch date is still in the future at the date of this comparison. The announcement presents Forever as a familiar but fresh Azeroth; it does not establish that the game will be identical to the 2004 release or Classic Era, nor does it specify every system or future update. Blizzard’s Forever announcement is a statement of direction and schedule, not a hands-on comparison.

“WoW Classic” can mean several different games

Blizzard’s Classic catalog includes Classic Era, Hardcore, Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary, Mists of Pandaria Classic, and Season of Discovery. Character progress does not carry over between Classic versions, so the label alone does not tell you which rules or content path you will get. For this comparison, the key distinction is between Forever and Classic Era—not Forever and every product Blizzard calls Classic.

Version or realm path Content path What it means for your choice
World of Warcraft: Forever Announced for November 4, 2026; Blizzard says it will add new stories, experiences, and updates. Choose it if the announced evolving original-world experience is what you want, and you are willing to wait for launch and further details.
Classic Era Latest phase of original WoW content; does not progress into expansion content. Choose it if you want to remain in the original-era game rather than move into an expansion.
20th Anniversary PvE/PvP realms These fresh realms were announced with a progression plan into Burning Crusade Classic; Blizzard now reports Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary is live. These are not a way to start on the original-era path and stay there. Their current progression is into Burning Crusade Classic.
Anniversary Hardcore Progresses through Classic Era content and does not progress into Burning Crusade Classic. A character that dies on a Hardcore realm cannot be resurrected there. Choose it only if the death rule and higher-stakes character commitment are part of the appeal.

Blizzard’s 2021 explanation of the Classic split distinguishes Era realms from expansion progression. Its 20th Anniversary announcement described the original PvE and PvP launch options and their planned progression; the later Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary update establishes the current state. The transfer window that allowed Anniversary characters to move to Classic Era ended January 12, 2026; characters left on Anniversary realms continued to Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary.

Which one should you play?

Choose Classic Era for original WoW without expansion progression

Classic Era is the clearest fit if you want original-era content to remain the destination. Blizzard says Era realms point to the latest phase of original WoW and do not advance into expansion content. That makes Era the relevant comparison for someone who wants a stable original-era path, rather than the Anniversary realms’ progression into Burning Crusade.

Wait for Forever if you want Blizzard’s announced evolving experience

Forever is aimed at players who want to return to the original continents but also want new stories, experiences, and updates. Its November 4, 2026 launch is announced, but it is not yet a playable alternative as of October 4. Blizzard has not established its comparative class balance, population, endgame, queues, addons, social experience, server health, or monetization in the cited announcement, so none of those can responsibly decide the comparison yet.

Pick a different Classic mode if your preference is more specific

  • Burning Crusade progression: the Anniversary PvE and PvP path is now Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary.
  • Hardcore: Anniversary Hardcore keeps to Classic Era content, but death is permanent on that realm: dead characters cannot be resurrected there. Blizzard’s 2023 Hardcore preview says a dead character could be moved to a non-Hardcore Era realm.
  • Season of Discovery or Mists of Pandaria Classic: both are part of Blizzard’s current Classic catalog, but they are distinct experiences rather than synonyms for Era or Forever.

Access: what is known and what is not

Blizzard’s Classic product hub says an active WoW subscription or game time provides access to the listed Classic versions. The cited Forever announcement does not establish whether Forever will use those same access terms. Check Blizzard’s launch information before assuming it is included or requires a separate purchase.
