A respectful wrestling tribute video starts with two decisions: what you want to celebrate and where the video will be shown. Then check the family’s public wishes and the rights for every clip, photo, recording, and song. A tribute is not automatically fair use, and an unofficial edit should never imply that a wrestler’s family or promotion endorses it.
Decide what the tribute is for
Choose the audience and destination before you edit. A private viewing, memorial service, and public social-media upload have different privacy and copyright implications. Decide whether the video will be monetized, too; music and other licenses may limit where content can appear or whether it can earn revenue.
Give the video a clear focus: a career overview, one team or era, signature performances, or what fans remember about the wrestler. Keep the emphasis on the person’s work and character. Avoid turning grief into spectacle, and do not present allegations or a cause of death as established unless reliable sources support them.
Check the family’s wishes before choosing material
Look for public statements from the wrestler’s family or estate, especially before using funeral or other private material. Do not repost footage merely because it was accessible on a fan or family page.

For example, a July 9, 2024 PWMania report reproduced a request attributed to the Anoa’i family asking fans to keep videos of Sika Anoa’i’s funeral private. The statement distinguished those videos from a photo that had been shared. In a separate case, a 2017 WWE article about Rosey reproduced the family’s request for privacy for his children and family as they mourned. These are particular family boundaries, not a universal rule; check the wishes relevant to the person you are honoring.
Audit clips, photos, and music for rights
Make an asset list before editing. For each item, record who created it, who owns it, where you obtained it, and whether your permission or license covers editing and your planned distribution. Credit is not permission.

WWE’s copyright and trademark notice says its event and television text, photographs, video, audio, and audiovisual programs are protected, and that unauthorized copying or derivative works violate its stated rights. This describes WWE’s position on its materials; other promotions have their own policies. Do not assume that a broadcast clip is free to reuse because it is short, widely shared, or part of a tribute.
For music, use a track you created, obtain written permission, or choose a license that expressly covers your video, destination platform, and intended monetization. YouTube’s Audio Library is an official option; check the current terms for each track. A third-party service’s “royalty-free” label alone does not establish that YouTube use or monetization is covered.

There is no fixed number of seconds of a song that is automatically safe when permission is required. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that there is “no hard and fast minimum amount of music you can use without getting permission when you need it.” It also notes that being unable to reach a rights holder does not substitute for permission. See the Office’s guidance for musicians.

In the United States, fair use is assessed case by case using four factors: the purpose and character of the use, the nature of the copyrighted work, the amount used, and the effect on the work’s market. A tribute’s personal or nonprofit purpose, a credit line, a disclaimer, or adding other material does not by itself settle the question. YouTube’s fair-use guidance explains the factors and emphasizes that courts—not automated systems—make the legal determination.

YouTube puts the disclaimer point plainly: “Including the phrase ‘no infringement intended’ won’t automatically protect you from a claim of copyright infringement.” An upload can still receive a Content ID claim or be taken down even if its creator believes it is fair use. An unlisted link is still a platform upload and does not grant rights.
YouTube’s explanation concerns U.S. law. Copyright exceptions differ by country; for example, the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore’s guidance describes a local, case-specific assessment. If you publish outside the United States, check the law that applies where you are and the platform’s current rules.

Edit for clarity and dignity
- Open simply. Use a short title card that identifies the wrestler and the tribute’s focus.
- Choose a structure. Arrange moments chronologically or by theme, such as teams, rivalries, or signature performances.
- Caption accurately. Check match names, dates, and context. Keep captions concise and avoid claims you cannot verify.
- Let moments breathe. Use restrained transitions and pacing. Avoid jokes or dramatic effects that make death or grief feel sensational.
- Close with a dedication. Keep it simple, and do not suggest that the family or promotion approved the video unless they have said so.
Review the video before publishing
- Confirm spellings, dates, and the context of each included moment.
- Check every asset against your rights and permission notes; a credit line is not a license.
- Listen for abrupt cuts, uneven audio, and music that overwhelms speech or creates an unintended tone.
- Make sure the title, description, and edit do not imply official endorsement.
- Set the audience and privacy settings intentionally, then review the platform’s current copyright and music rules for the destination and any monetization.
