Fast bowlers target the base of the stumps with a yorker to crowd the batter’s feet, limit the room for a full swing and threaten a dismissal. The aim is not to hit the stumps every time: a yorker is a very full delivery that pitches at or near the batter’s feet. Its value depends on landing it accurately—too short and it may be a hittable half-volley; too full to pitch and it becomes a full toss.
What makes a yorker a useful target?
A yorker’s very full pitching length brings the ball to the batter at the feet or near the base of the stumps. That leaves little space to swing through a conventional drive. If the batter fails to bring the bat down in time, the ball can hit the stumps or trap the batter; if the batter is trying to hit a boundary, the cramped contact point can make clean scoring harder.
Wasim Akram, quoted by the ICC, linked the delivery to learning to bowl straight: “When you play gully cricket with buildings on both sides and the batsman being deprived of playing cross-batted shots on both sides, they are forced to play straight then. And then you start pitching it up and in the process you learn to bowl at the base and prevent the batsman from going down the ground.” This is Akram’s account of how he developed the tactic, not proof that the base is always the best target. Read the ICC interview.
Why use yorkers at the end of an innings?
In death overs, batters often need boundaries and may prepare to swing hard. An accurate yorker attacks that plan by taking away space and time at the point of contact. It can threaten the stumps or force a cramped defensive shot, while denying the batter the clean hitting arc they want.

Why not bowl a yorker every ball?
The margin for error is small
The bowler must hit a precise, very full landing zone. If the ball pitches short, it can sit up as a half-volley; if it does not pitch before reaching the batter, it is a full toss. Either miss may be easier to score from than a well-controlled stock delivery.

Yadav put the difficulty plainly: “Everyone knows how to bowl a yorker but not everyone can.” He also described focusing on the intended pitching spot, maintaining body position and committing to a clear plan as helpful to his own execution. Those are his reported experiences, not universal technical rules.
Research finds the length harder to execute
A 2022 conference study by Manawadu, Felton, Hiley and King examined 707 fast-bowling trials by 21 male fast bowlers. In that sample, bowlers had more difficulty achieving the intended yorker variation than the intended bouncer or stock delivery. The study describes those participants and trials; it is not a success rate for all bowlers or levels of cricket. See the conference paper.

That execution risk helps explain why a yorker is a selective option rather than an automatic choice for every delivery. It can be worthwhile when the batter is set to attack or the situation makes denying a boundary valuable, but the bowler also has to weigh what an inaccurate attempt could offer the batter. Yorkers are not exclusive to limited-overs death overs: the ICC has also noted Jasprit Bumrah’s use of them in Test cricket.
How the batter and field change the target
A straight yorker is not the only option. The line can change with the batter’s movement and handedness, the field setting, the innings phase and the bowler’s confidence. If a batter backs away or shifts position, a wide yorker may make them reach for the ball instead of swinging from a balanced stance.

The Australian Cricket Institute’s coaching material distinguishes yorkers aimed at the feet, at the stumps and wide of off stump. These are options to match to the batter and field, not a single prescribed line for every situation. See its yorker coaching guide.

A 2023 analysis of 3,767 balls bowled by international fast bowlers in two men’s ODI tournaments examined the last ten overs. Its abstract reports that yorker-length deliveries restricted runs more effectively than half-volleys and full tosses. That finding is specific to the death phase of those two men’s 50-over tournaments; the abstract does not provide effect sizes, and it does not establish a universal success rate or wicket probability. How to practise yorker accuracy
The Australian Cricket Institute suggests placing visible targets at different lines, bowling repeated overs at a chosen marker and counting how often the ball lands on or near it. Yadav’s interview also emphasizes focusing on the intended landing spot and body alignment. This is sourced coaching guidance, not a guarantee of improved performance.
Quick Recap
- Place a visible marker at the intended landing area, such as the base of the stumps or a chosen line outside off stump.
- Bowl repeated deliveries at that marker, keeping the target line and length consistent during the drill.
- Count balls that pitch on or near the target. Use the result to judge control rather than treating a single successful ball as proof of consistency.
