They are related performance figures, not interchangeable numbers. Read them alongside the event, category and session heading so you know which results you are comparing.
What the columns mean
| Column | What it tells you |

| Position | The qualifying rank displayed for that event and category. It is not a time or speed measurement. |
| ET | Elapsed time from when the vehicle leaves the staging beams until it reaches the finish line. A lower ET is a shorter measured run. |
| MPH | Speed measured in a 66-foot speed trap ending at the finish line, according to NHRA’s NHRA 101 explainer. It is not the run’s total elapsed duration. |
NHRA’s explainer says elapsed time and speed are monitored for each run. Since ET and MPH describe different measurements, a higher MPH alone does not tell you which driver qualified ahead; use the position column for the displayed rank.
How to read a qualifying order
- Check the event and category. NHRA results pages are specific to an event and category; use the page heading and category selector to confirm you are in the right place.
- Confirm the qualifying context. Compare results from the same qualifying session or context rather than mixing different sessions or elimination rounds.
- Read position, ET and MPH separately. Position gives the displayed rank; ET and MPH give run measurements. Do not treat one of those measurements as another name for rank.
For example, the 2026 NHRA Nationals at The Rock qualifying-order page lists Doug Kalitta at position 01 with a 3.683 ET and 338.09 MPH. Those are figures from that event and category page, not general benchmarks for NHRA competition.
Qualifying orders and elimination ladders are different
A qualifying order shows the ranking going into eliminations. An elimination ladder shows pairings and round outcomes, and may also show run details. The 2026 NHRA U.S. Nationals ladder, for example, separately identifies low ET, best reaction time and top speed while displaying pairing lines with reaction time and ET-MPH figures.

Pairing rules depend on the category and series. The 2026 NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series policies state that category pairings are based on established NHRA ladders and position set by qualifying time, and specify professional or sportsman ladders for named categories. That policy applies to the series and categories it covers; check the rules for the relevant event and class rather than assuming every NHRA category uses the same format.
Other fields in detailed results
- RT (reaction time): A field shown separately from ET. NHRA’s NHRA 101 page explains the starting tree and timing sequence, but does not establish the precise clock origin for the RT value displayed in detailed results. Do not interpret RT as the run’s ET.
- Incremental times: Splits such as 60 FT, 330 FT and 660 FT show progress through a run. Detailed results may also include 660 MPH, ET and MPH, as in this NHRA Nationals at The Rock results example.
- MOV (margin of victory): A separate race-outcome field. It is not another elapsed-time value.
Compare like with like
Before drawing a conclusion from two rows, confirm the event, category and session or round. Then compare the qualifying positions for rank, ET for elapsed performance, and MPH for the speed-trap reading. For a head-to-head elimination result, use the ladder and its outcome fields; RT, splits and MOV describe different aspects of the run or race.

NHRA’s Power Rankings explanation describes statistical categories and was last updated on February 25, 2020. Treat it as background on those statistics, not as current authority for class rules or qualifying procedures.
