You can start playing tennis with three basics: a comfortable racquet, tennis balls, and supportive court shoes with non-marking soles. Borrow or demo a racquet before buying one, find a public court or beginner class, and start with easy ball-control drills rather than trying to hit hard.
What equipment do you need to start playing tennis?
For a typical adult beginner, keep the first purchase list short:
- A comfortable racquet: Choose one that feels manageable and has a grip that fits comfortably in your hand. Racquet choice can take trial and error, so ask whether you can borrow one or try a demo before spending money.
- Tennis balls: Standard balls work, but a lower-compression ball—such as a red-dot ball—can slow early rallies and make control easier.
- Supportive court shoes: Wear shoes suited to tennis movement, with soles that will not mark the court. Ordinary running shoes may not provide the same support for quick side-to-side movement.
You do not need premium gear to begin. The USTA’s beginner guide to tennis identifies a racquet and balls as the basic equipment and recommends a comfortable grip and trying options where possible.
For children: scale the racquet, ball, and court
Children generally need equipment sized to their height and ability rather than adult gear. USTA Midwest gives 21–26-inch pre-strung racquets as general guidance for younger children and 27-inch racquets for older youth. Its red, orange, green, and yellow ball stages pair slower balls with progressively larger playing areas. These are guidelines, not rigid age rules: a child’s size, coordination, and experience matter.

Where should you play, and what are the court basics?
A standard adult tennis court is 78 feet long. It is 27 feet wide for singles and 36 feet wide for doubles. The singles sidelines are inside the wider doubles sidelines; the extra width is used when playing doubles.
You do not need a full-size court to learn control or start rallying. Beginners can use adjusted boundaries and net heights. Cones, tape, court markers, or a portable net can define a smaller playing space; adapt the setup to the players’ ability and the space available. The USTA’s 2026 Public Parks Resource Guide recommends portable or pop-up nets for beginners of all ages and social play.

Youth court and ball stages
Youth tennis commonly progresses through court and ball sizes so players can rally and move effectively before stepping onto a full court:
| Stage | Court setup | Ball |
|---|---|---|
| Red | 36 by 18 feet | Red, low-compression ball |
| Orange | 60 feet long; playing width varies with singles or doubles setup | Orange, lower-compression ball |
| Green | Full-size court: 78 feet long | Green, lower-compression ball |
| Yellow | Full-size court: 78 feet long | Standard yellow ball |
The court dimensions and stages follow USTA guidance; the appropriate stage depends on the player, not age alone. A USTA court-dimensions guide explains the scaled layouts.

How can you get onto a court or find a beginner lesson?
Look for a public court, community tennis program, or introductory class. If you are new to the sport, a beginner lesson can help you learn basic rules, grips, and movement while using balls and court space suited to the group.
The USTA National Tennis Center describes Tennis 101 as a 90-minute introductory class for people with no prior experience, covering rules and basic concepts and using low-compression balls as appropriate. That is an example of one program, not a guarantee of availability elsewhere. USTA Midwest’s Tennis 101 page points readers toward finding a nearby beginner program; check local listings for current options.

What should you do in your first tennis practice?
Start with control and movement, not power. A lower-compression or red-dot ball can give you more time to track the bounce. Use an open area or a reduced court, and keep the first practice simple.
1. Bounce, tap, and catch
- Hold the ball with your palm or thumb facing up and tap it gently with the racquet to about eye height.
- Let the ball bounce once, then catch it with your other hand.
- As the ball comes to your forehand side, move your feet and turn your shoulders so your body becomes sideways to it.
- When catching feels reliable, continue tapping the ball after each bounce instead of catching it.
This self-rally progression is described in the USTA’s beginner forehand drill, which recommends a red-dot ball for first-time players of any age.

2. Try a cooperative short rally
With a partner, stand close enough to exchange controlled balls. Agree to use a slower ball or a smaller target area if that makes the rally easier. Count successful exchanges; aim for a gentle, playable arc rather than a hard hit. Adjusting the court and equipment can help beginners rally sooner.
3. Rally, then recover
After each groundstroke, move back toward a home-base position near the middle of the baseline and get ready for the next ball. This habit helps you avoid watching your shot from one spot and being out of position for the reply. The USTA’s Ready, Rally and Recover drill is intended for beginner and intermediate players.
