Manage training load by progressing it individually, tracking how the athlete responds, and planning recovery around training, competition, travel, and life outside sport. Workload monitoring can help reveal patterns and guide adjustments, but no single percentage, ratio, score, or device can reliably predict an individual injury or define a guaranteed safe zone.
What counts as an athlete’s workload?
Workload is more than the number of workouts or minutes spent training. It includes how often and how long an athlete trains, how hard the sessions are, competition exposure, travel, and psychological stress. Demands outside sport can also affect how much recovery an athlete has available.
It helps to distinguish external load—the work performed, such as session duration, intensity, or competition exposure—from internal load—the athlete’s response to that work. Two athletes completing the same session may not experience it in the same way, and one athlete’s response can vary over time.
| What to track | Examples | What it can show |
|---|---|---|
| External load | Session duration, intensity, training frequency, competitions, and travel | What demands were placed on the athlete |
| Internal response | Perceived effort, fatigue, well-being, symptoms, and injury status | How the athlete is responding to those demands |
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) consensus statements describe load and injury relationships as multifactorial, with profiles differing across sports. An athlete’s preparation, current capacity, load history, and recovery all matter; a high training load is not automatically harmful, and progressive training can build capacity. The IOC consensus statement on load and injury risk was published in 2016.

How should training load progress?
Use a flexible, individual plan
Make changes in a way that accounts for the athlete’s preparation and response, rather than applying the same increase to everyone. The IOC authors write: “Load should always be prescribed on an individual and flexible basis, as there is large inter- and intra-individual variation in the time frame of response and adaptation to load.” The 2016 IOC consensus statement also notes that athletes generally respond better to smaller fluctuations than large ones, while emphasizing that evidence is not uniform across sports.
Account for the whole schedule
Consider competitions, congested calendars, travel, and non-sport demands alongside planned training. When several demands cluster together, assess the total load and recovery opportunity rather than treating each session in isolation. The IOC statement calls for special attention when young or developing athletes encounter new loads or calendar changes.

Treat numeric rules as context, not targets
The IOC consensus statement reports that weekly training-load increases of <10% were associated with lower injury risk in evidence from Australian football, cricket, and rugby league. It also reports an acute:chronic load ratio range of 0.8–1.3 associated with low injury likelihood in data from those sports. These are findings from selected datasets, not universal limits, forecasts, or guarantees for an individual athlete. A larger-than-10% increase does not mean injury will occur, and a ratio within 0.8–1.3 does not establish that training is safe for a particular person. The IOC statement notes that load-injury profiles differ among sports and that more research across sports and athlete groups is needed.
How can athletes and coaches monitor workload?
Use monitoring to make changes and responses visible, not as a diagnostic system. No single marker has been validated to identify maladaptation. Consistency matters: a simple record kept regularly may be more useful for noticing patterns than a complicated measure used sporadically.

A paper logbook or a digital record can track:
- Training duration, intensity, frequency, and competition exposure.
- Perceived effort and fatigue.
- Well-being, symptoms, and injury status.
- Travel, major schedule changes, and other demands that affect recovery.
Review the record alongside the athlete’s own response. If symptoms, fatigue, or well-being change as workload changes, that information can prompt a conversation about adjusting the plan; it cannot by itself diagnose an injury or prove what caused it. The IOC consensus on load and injury risk supports individual, flexible decisions rather than a single monitoring measure. PubMed’s bibliographic record identifies the statement and its 2016 publication.
What should a recovery plan include?
Recovery is part of workload planning, not a single product or intervention. The IOC consensus on load and illness names several components to consider:

The IOC illness consensus says available data are limited and sport-specific guidance is difficult, so these components should not be turned into a universal formula or a promised result. The 2016 IOC consensus statement on load and illness provides that evidence context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can workload tracking predict an injury?
No: workload tracking can support informed decisions, but it should not be treated as an individual injury-prediction system. Injury is multifactorial, and the 2016 IOC consensus discusses evidence from a limited range of sports and populations. The acute:chronic ratio findings it summarizes involve Australian football, cricket, and rugby league; they do not establish a universal threshold for other sports or for every athlete.

Likewise, a workload number alone cannot show whether an athlete has adapted well, is recovering adequately, or is injured. Use load records together with perceived effort, fatigue, well-being, symptoms, and injury status, and interpret them in the athlete’s context. The statements cited here are consensus guidance published in 2016, not proof that any one score, wearable, percentage rule, or recovery product reliably forecasts or prevents injury.
