To find the likely replacement for an unavailable NFL receiver, use the depth chart to identify candidates, then verify who is active and compare their alignment and recent participation. The next name listed is a lead—not proof that the player will inherit the missing receiver’s snaps, routes, targets, or fantasy production.
Start by confirming the receiver is unavailable
Identify the team, game, and receiver in question, then check the latest game-week status. An injury designation earlier in the week may change, so treat any replacement guess as provisional until the team’s final status and game-day inactives are known. NFL Support says teams designate inactives about 90 minutes before scheduled kickoff: NFL Support’s inactive guidance.
Use the depth chart to build a candidate list
Open the team’s current depth chart and note the receivers behind the unavailable player. Check whether the chart distinguishes position, side, or slot role; a simple WR1/WR2 order does not necessarily describe who will take a particular assignment.
That matters because receiver usage changes with formation. NFL Football Operations notes that “A standard formation calls for two wide receivers, but some offenses use three or four at a time.” A backup listed behind one receiver is not automatically his one-for-one substitute: NFL Football Operations’ football terms.

Check who is eligible and active for the game
Roster status and game-day availability are different checks. NFL.com’s training camp roster FAQs explain the distinctions among the regular-season roster, game-day active list, injured reserve, and practice squad. The FAQ includes season-specific details, so consult current NFL rules for any rule-dependent roster limit.
- Game-day inactive: The player is unavailable for that game. Check the final designation close to kickoff.
- Injured reserve: A player on IR is not eligible to play while on the list; return depends on applicable rules and timing.
- Practice squad: Eligible practice-squad players may be elevated, but an elevation is a roster move—not evidence of a particular receiving role or workload.
- Roster versus game-day list: Being on the regular-season roster does not by itself establish that a player is active for this game.
Before comparing candidates, confirm each is eligible and on the game-day active list. A depth-chart listing or practice-squad elevation alone does not establish availability or playing time.

Compare role fit and recent participation
For each active candidate, compare the player’s likely assignment with the unavailable receiver’s role. These are practical checks, not an official NFL scoring system:
- Alignment: Was the absent player primarily used in the slot, outside, or in multiple spots? A slot receiver may be a closer fit for a slot assignment; an outside receiver may fit an outside role.
- Recent participation: Look at who has already been involved in the offense and how regularly, rather than relying only on the ordering of names on a chart.
- Assignment match: Consider whether the candidate appears suited to the work the absent receiver handled. A team may distribute those duties across several players instead of giving them to one replacement.
- Availability: Confirm the candidate is active before treating the player as a game-day option.
These checks can help identify the most plausible replacement, but they do not guarantee that the candidate will receive the same snaps, routes, or targets.

If you are making a fantasy decision
Separate the question “Who might take over this role?” from “Who is worth starting?” For a fantasy recommendation, also assess likely routes and targets, quarterback and team context, and the opponent using current game-week information. The NFL sources cited here establish roster and formation context; they do not provide team-specific player projections.
No published rate in the official sources establishes how often the next-listed receiver takes over an unavailable player’s role. Avoid assigning a percentage without relevant evidence, and present any player-specific forecast as an estimate rather than a certainty.
