The best wearable for tracking training load and recovery is the one that records the activities and signals relevant to you—and that you can wear consistently. A watch or band can help you spot trends, but its load and recovery scores are estimates interpreted by that company’s system, not universal measures of fitness or a verdict on whether you should train.
What training load means on a wearable
Training load is an estimate of the demands of recorded exercise. It can help show how your recent training is changing, but its meaning depends on the device maker’s inputs, formula and time window. A score from one brand should not be compared directly with a score from another.
Garmin’s approach
Garmin describes its exercise-load estimate as based on excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), a measure it uses to estimate physiological impact and resulting recovery demand. Garmin distinguishes the load from a single activity from acute load, which combines recent recorded activities. Its current acute-load view uses a weighted moving average normalized to seven days; the influence of an activity fades over the following ten days. These are Garmin’s definitions, not an industry-wide formula.
Garmin says compatible devices calculate exercise load for activities recorded with heart rate. Its training-status interpretation also considers estimated VO₂ max and recent training volume and composition; devices that support HRV status include that perspective. Garmin advises recording all activities with heart rate for a fuller picture. In a compatible Edge cycling setup, a heart-rate monitor and power meter may be used for the EPOC estimate.

Why complete activity records matter
A load trend is only as representative as the activity data behind it. If you routinely leave sessions unrecorded, or use a device inconsistently, its picture of your recent training can be incomplete. Before reacting to a change in load, consider whether your recent workouts were captured in the same way as usual.
What recovery scores can—and cannot—tell you
Recovery features commonly interpret overnight or resting signals such as heart-rate variability (HRV), resting heart rate and sleep. These can be useful for noticing changes in your own patterns. A displayed score or label such as “ready,” however, is a brand-specific composite—not a direct measurement of readiness and not a clinical determination.
That distinction matters when comparing products: similarly presented scores from two brands need not use the same signals, calculations or thresholds. WHO’s report, published 3 February 2026 after a specialist meeting held 10–12 June 2025, describes ongoing international work on wearable physical-activity metrics, device specifications, protocols, evidence evaluation and research needs. That work is a reason to be careful about treating any one score as a universal standard; it does not mean measurement standards are absent.

Use a score as context, not a command
When a recovery score is lower than usual, weigh it alongside how you feel, symptoms, perceived effort and actual performance. A wearable alone should not diagnose illness or dictate a training decision. Look for patterns across multiple days rather than treating one reading as a definitive answer, and seek appropriate medical advice for health concerns.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat the late-workout study does and does not show
In a 25 June 2025 press release, WHOOP described a study published in Nature Communications with Monash University and Harvard University. The company said the analysis covered 14,689 WHOOP members and more than 4 million nights. For its analysis of high-strain workouts close to bedtime, WHOOP reported a 36-minute delay in sleep onset and a 22-minute reduction in sleep duration, along with changes in resting heart rate and HRV.
Those are company-reported results for that study population and analysis—not guaranteed effects for an individual, proof that every tracker is accurate, or a universal rule that every athlete should avoid evening exercise.

How to choose a training-load and recovery wearable
Start with your sport and routines, not a search for a single “most accurate” device. A wearable that fits your activities and habits is more useful than one with impressive-looking metrics you do not consistently record or use.
- Sport and recording: Check whether the device records the activities and signals relevant to your sport, and whether you are likely to log every session.
- Load method: Look for an explanation of what the maker’s load score uses, its time window and what the result is intended to represent.
- Recovery context: Decide whether trends in HRV, resting heart rate and sleep answer questions you actually have. Treat them as context rather than a readiness verdict.
- Wear and charging: Consider whether you can wear the device for workouts and sleep, and whether its charging routine fits your schedule.
- Cost model: Establish whether you are considering a device purchase, an ongoing membership or both. Check current terms and total cost before choosing a specific product.
- Ecosystem: Verify compatibility with your phone, sensors, bike computer and training software for the exact models you own or plan to use.
Garmin sports watch or WHOOP?
| Approach | What it emphasizes | Worth considering if |
|---|---|---|
| Garmin sports watch | Workout recording and, on compatible devices, load and training-status metrics. Garmin’s load definitions and supported features vary by device. | You want a sports-watch approach centered on recording workouts and tracking load trends. |
| WHOOP wearable | Continuous wear and a membership-based approach focused on recovery, strain, sleep and related insights. | You are interested in continuous tracking and are comfortable with a membership-based product model. |
These are different product approaches, not a universal ranking. Exact feature support and compatibility depend on the specific device or setup. No independent named statistic comparing current Garmin and WHOOP training-load or recovery accuracy establishes one as more accurate overall.

How to use the data in training decisions
- Check the inputs. Confirm that the sessions and overnight data behind the display are present and reasonably consistent with your usual tracking.
- Read the trend in its own system. Use the device’s explanation of its metric; do not translate its score into another brand’s scale.
- Compare it with your experience. Consider symptoms, perceived effort and performance as well as the wearable’s signals.
- Make the decision from the whole picture. Treat a score as one input, not a diagnosis or automatic instruction to train or rest.
For gamers who also train, that approach keeps a wearable in its proper role: a way to notice patterns around exercise, sleep and routine, not a measure of gaming performance or a substitute for listening to your body.
