If you’re choosing between the Chargers’ quarterbacks, Justin Herbert is the supported start if he is active and you need a quarterback. Los Angeles lists Herbert first and Trey Lance second on its depth chart; Lance is questionable with a groin injury. Check final availability before kickoff, and compare Herbert with your actual roster options rather than assuming he is the best start over every quarterback in your league.
Herbert or Lance: who should you start?
For the direct question, “Who should I start, Trey Lance or Justin Herbert?”, start Herbert if he is active and you need a quarterback. The Chargers’ official depth chart lists Herbert first at quarterback and Lance second. A depth chart indicates listed team order; it is not a fantasy projection.

Should you start Herbert over another quarterback on your roster?
The Chargers’ depth chart helps answer which of their quarterbacks is first in line; it cannot tell you whether Herbert is a better fantasy start than every quarterback available to you. Compare him with your actual alternatives using your league’s scoring rules and current matchup and projection information. The official sources cited here do not provide a comparative fantasy projection or establish that Herbert should start over a non-Charger.

What the earlier quarterback-room context does—and doesn’t—show
In its July 7, 2026 training-camp preview, the Chargers described Lance as having held a firm grasp on the backup role the previous season and named Herbert, Lance and DJ Uiagalelei in the quarterback room. That is background, not a substitute for the current listed order: the team’s current depth chart places Herbert ahead of Lance. The preview also quoted head coach Jim Harbaugh discussing Herbert’s planned ramp-up to camp and the season; it does not establish Herbert’s health for this Week 4 game.
