To choose which available wide receiver to add, start with recurring targets and routes, then judge whether the role is likely to last. Compare candidates against your scoring settings, lineup needs and the roster spot or waiver priority you would spend. The best choice depends on your league and its live player pool—not a universal ranking.
How should you prioritize available wide receivers?
- Find the repeatable opportunity. Check recent targets, target share, routes run and playing time. Give more weight to a receiver consistently involved than to one whose value rests on a single big game. Matt Okada of NFL.com wrote in 2026, referring to the 2025 season, that “All five of the wideouts to see 150-plus targets were top six in fantasy by season’s end (George Pickens was the only outlier, with 137 targets).” That is a historical association, not proof that a particular target total guarantees future results. - Decide whether the role can last. Identify why the receiver is getting opportunities: a promotion, a change in the offense, or a teammate’s injury. For injury replacements, consider whether the absent player is expected back soon and whether the backup is running a stable set of routes. A short-term plug-in can help with an immediate need without being a sound rest-of-season hold. NFL.com’s September 28, 2026 Week 4 waiver discussion framed Mack Hollins’s appeal around A.J. - Use efficiency to add context. Target share shows how much of a team’s passing opportunity goes to a player; yards per route run can help distinguish production earned on regular routes from a box score built on limited chances. Use these alongside routes and targets rather than as standalone guarantees. NFL.com used target share and yards per route run in its Week 4, 2026 discussion of Kalif Raymond and Mack Hollins. - Compare the projection for the job you need filled. A receiver’s expected points matter differently if you need a starter this week than if you can stash a bench player for later. NFL.com’s Best Available feature lets users compare projections for this week, a future week, the rest of the season or the playoffs, and shows projected point difference when adding a player as a starter or bench option. - Apply your league’s scoring and roster constraints. Check PPR scoring, lineup slots, bench depth, bye weeks and the player you would drop. A receiver with frequent short catches may gain relative appeal in reception-scoring formats; a league that awards no reception points changes that calculation. NFL.com’s default scoring awards one point per reception, while its NFL Fantasy projections use full PPR according to an FAQ updated August 20, 2026. - Check the acquisition cost and timing. A strong candidate may not be worth spending top waiver priority on if your roster has a more urgent need or a comparable alternative is available. Before acting, check the league’s waiver deadline, priority or budget rules, and whether the player is actually locked. On NFL Fantasy, free agents can be added immediately, while players on waivers remain unavailable until the league’s waiver period ends. Other platforms and custom leagues may work differently. Which signals should outweigh a recent box score?
Favor a pattern of playing time and targets over one unusually productive game, while checking whether the role is stable enough to continue. Target share and yards per route run help interpret that opportunity; they do not replace the context of routes, injuries and expected usage. A favorable matchup can support a close decision, but should not by itself erase a weak or temporary role.
Separate your time horizon before deciding: a receiver who can cover a bye-week start may be more useful than a longer-term stash if your lineup is short this week. Conversely, if your starters are healthy, a player with a more durable path to routes may have greater bench value than a temporary replacement.
How to use projections without letting them make the decision
Use a projection tool to compare candidates for the role you actually intend to give the player. NFL Fantasy Best Available provides starter-versus-bench point differences and selectable horizons, including this week, a future week, rest of season and playoffs. Those comparisons can clarify the cost of an add or drop, but their usefulness depends on choosing the correct league scoring and horizon. A projection is an estimate, not a guarantee of playing time or points.

Why there is no universal waiver ranking
The best receiver to claim changes with the available-player list, league scoring, lineup requirements, waiver mechanics and your roster. Without those details, a fixed add order or FAAB amount would be false precision. Work through the opportunity, role durability, scoring fit and roster cost for the players currently available in your own league; refresh injury and usage information before submitting a claim.
