If a player changes numbers but stays with the same team, you can keep wearing or displaying the jersey as it is. If you want the name or number altered, have a reputable customizer inspect the exact jersey first: removing or replacing graphics can leave marks or damage. If the player changed teams, check the original retailer’s current replacement terms before making a decision.
Choose based on what matters most to you
There is no single right answer. Consider whether the original purchase qualifies for a replacement, the risk and cost of alteration, the jersey’s sentimental value, and whether a suitable donation program accepts jerseys in your area.
- Keep it as-is: The jersey still represents the player and number it commemorated. A number change does not make it unusable fan apparel, and leaving it alone avoids alteration risk.
- Check replacement coverage: If the player moved to another team—or the seller’s terms address number changes—review the policy for the original purchase promptly.
- Ask about alteration: A customizer can assess the graphics and fabric, explain potential damage or traces, and quote the work before you decide.
- Donate it: Look for a current local youth hockey, community sports, or textile reuse program that accepts jerseys.
- Buy another jersey only if you want one: A new player jersey or blank is optional; check its construction and customization options before buying.
Check the policy of the seller you bought it from
Replacement programs are seller-specific. Do not assume one retailer’s terms apply to another retailer’s purchase, and confirm the current instructions and deadlines before sending anything back.

NHL Shop’s Jersey Assurance FAQ excludes a player changing name, number, or role without changing teams. Its terms and conditions describe coverage for an eligible active-player jersey bought on NHLShop.com when the player is traded or signs as a free agent with a new team within 90 days of purchase. The terms say an eligible replacement may be a player from the original team or the moved player on the new team. They also require the paperwork to be received within 14 days of the official transaction date, and the original jersey must be returned using the program label. Check the live terms for eligibility and instructions before acting.

Verify that your item qualifies and follow Fanatics’ current instructions; NHL Shop’s rules do not automatically apply.
Understand the risks before changing the name or number
Jersey graphics are not all attached the same way. NHL Shop’s jersey guide describes sewn-on graphics for its authentic style and ironed-on name, number, and logo graphics for its replica style. Those categories are not a guarantee of how a particular garment was made: construction can vary by season and manufacturer, so identify the actual jersey rather than relying on a style label alone.

Real Sports Apparel says it cannot change existing jersey names or numbers without risking damage. The retailer also describes customization for blank jerseys, including heat-pressed work and some stitching done off-site; that does not establish that every existing jersey can be altered safely. Ask a shop experienced with your garment to inspect it, explain what might remain visible or be damaged, and provide a quote before authorizing work. Look for an active donation option nearby
Donation can be a practical choice if you no longer want the jersey, but programs vary by location and have their own acceptance rules and deadlines. Check with local youth hockey organizations, community sports programs, or textile reuse services before dropping it off.

NHL.com reported on Rogers’ Great Canadian Jersey campaign, which included participating stores and mail-in options in Canada. That campaign’s collection deadline was January 15, so it is an example of a time-limited program, not evidence that donations are currently being accepted.
