In NFL coverage, “good to go” usually means a player is expected to be available to play. It is informal wording—not an official NFL injury designation or a guarantee that the player will take the field. For a specific game, check the latest official game-status report and the game-day inactive list.
Is “good to go” an official NFL injury status?
No. The phrase is casual language used to describe expected availability. The NFL’s formal game-status labels are Questionable, Doubtful, and Out. The NFL’s policy announcement defines them as follows: Questionable means it is uncertain whether the player will play; Doubtful means it is unlikely the player will participate; and Out means the player will not play.
Those definitions are qualitative. The NFL policy does not assign percentage odds to the labels, so Questionable should not be read as a fixed 50/50 chance.
How do practice participation and game status differ?
Practice participation records what a player did during the week; game status addresses whether the player is expected to participate in the game. NFL injury reports list these separately. A player can have full practice participation and still be listed as Questionable or Out, so a full practice does not by itself mean “good to go.” Check both columns and use the newest report available for that game. The NFL’s 2016 policy revision also said that a player considered certain to play would not be listed with a game-status designation, even if included on the practice report. Because that description comes from the 2016 revision, it should not be treated as a current-season enforcement guide without checking the applicable policy.
What should you check before assuming a player will play?
- Find the latest official injury report for the game. Read the game-status label alongside the practice participation entry, and note the report date.
- Check for a later update. An older quote or report may no longer reflect the player’s status.
- Check the game-day inactive list. A player’s final availability is game-specific; an expectation that the player is ready is not the same as confirmation that he will play.
Player or coach comments can offer context, but informal “good to go” wording should not replace the latest official update.

Does “good to go” override concussion protocol?
No. Concussion return follows a separate NFL return-to-participation process. The NFL says there is no set timeframe for return and that team medical staff consider the player’s current concussion, past exposures, medical history, family history, and future risk.
