How NHL Teams Replace an Injured Defenseman in the Lineup

An injury does not automatically trigger an AHL call-up. Here is how NHL roster rules, IR, recalls, and coaching choices determine who fills the lineup spot.

An NHL team does not automatically need to call up a new defenseman when one is injured. The coach can dress another defenseman already on the roster. If the club needs an additional NHL-roster player, it may place an eligible injured player on injured reserve (IR) and use the roster opening to recall a defenseman, often from its AHL affiliate. The choice depends on player availability, roster and recall rules, and the team’s salary-cap position.

What happens when a defenseman is injured?

The injury and the lineup decision are separate matters. The club’s medical staff determines whether the player meets the criteria for IR; the coach decides which available defenseman dresses and how that player is used. A defenseman on the active roster may fill the lineup spot without a transaction. If the team needs another player on its NHL roster, a recall may be an option.

NHL guidance says a player who is injured, disabled, or ill and unable to perform after passing the club’s initial physical examination that season may be placed on IR. The league says a player whose injury makes him physically unable to play for at least seven days may be placed there. An IR player is ineligible to compete in NHL games for at least seven days and does not count against the 23-player limit. The NHL’s Hockey Operations Guidelines describe IR as a roster mechanism, not an assignment of a replacement.

How can a team cover the lineup spot?

Use a defenseman already on the roster

If another defenseman is available, the coach can put him in the lineup. This avoids a recall, but it does not mean the replacement will take the injured player’s defensive pair, minutes, or special-teams duties. Those are coaching decisions, not consequences of the IR transaction.

Recall a defenseman from another roster

A standard recall brings a player from another roster—often the club’s AHL affiliate—onto the NHL roster. The candidate must be available and eligible to move under the applicable recall and waiver rules. The team also has to fit the transaction within its roster and salary-cap circumstances.

For example, on November 29, 2025, the Boston Bruins announced that they had placed defenseman Henri Jokiharju on IR and recalled defenseman Michael Callahan from Providence on an emergency basis. The Bruins transaction announcement illustrates one possible sequence; it does not establish that every injured defenseman leads to a recall or that Callahan automatically took Jokiharju’s exact role.

When is an emergency recall possible?

An emergency recall is tied to a shortage of available players, not simply to the fact that someone is injured. The Carolina Hurricanes’ transaction primer describes emergency recalls as available when injuries or illness leave a team below 12 available forwards, six available defensemen, or two goalies. It also notes that waiver eligibility and recall limits can affect which player a club can move.

Those details can depend on the season and governing agreement. The Hurricanes primer says that after the trade deadline, clubs have four regular recalls during the 40-day period through the end of the season, while emergency recalls are not limited in the same way. Check the applicable season’s NHL/NHLPA rules before treating that limit as current for a specific transaction.

How IR differs from LTIR

IR makes a roster spot available under the league’s injury rules; it does not itself raise the team’s spending limit. Long-term injured reserve (LTIR) is a salary-cap mechanism for a longer absence, not a lineup assignment. The Hurricanes primer describes LTIR as applying when an injury or illness is expected to keep a player out for at least 10 games and 24 days, and explains that it can increase a team’s spending limit.

Actual cap treatment depends on the club’s circumstances and the applicable collective bargaining agreement. The NHL’s July 21, 2025 CBA explainer says the new agreement takes effect in 2026–27 and changes playoff salary-cap treatment for the 20 players dressed in a game. Older descriptions of LTIR should therefore not be assumed to cover every 2026–27 situation.

What determines which replacement dresses?

The transaction can make a player eligible to join the NHL roster, but the coach chooses the lineup. When comparing possible replacements, the relevant factors are whether the player is already on the NHL roster or needs a recall, whether he is available and eligible under recall and waiver rules, and whether the club can accommodate the move under roster and cap rules. A roster announcement alone does not establish a player’s pair, minutes, or special-teams role.

The Hurricanes transaction primer describes an active roster of at least 20 and, through the trade deadline, no more than 23 players; NHL guidance separately says IR players do not count toward the 23-player limit. Treat these figures as rule context, not a claim that any one club has a particular number of available defensemen at a given moment.
