Compare the replacement’s expected participation, role, matchup, scoring fit and kickoff time; there is no universally best substitute without knowing your roster, league settings and available players.
Confirm the tight end is actually unavailable
An injury designation is not the same as a confirmed absence. The NFL defines Questionable as uncertain to play, Doubtful as unlikely to participate and Out as not playing. NFL Fantasy support says teams designate inactives about 90 minutes before kickoff, so check the official inactive list close to game time when a player’s status is uncertain.
If the player is officially inactive, replace him. If he is still questionable, weigh the risk of waiting against your lineup-lock deadline and whether you have a viable later-playing option.
Check your league’s lineup-lock rule
Do not assume every league locks all positions at the same time. ESPN’s default League Manager setting locks each player’s slot at that player’s scheduled game time, but a league can instead lock everyone at the first game of the week or day. Yahoo daily-change leagues allow active and bench changes until the scheduled start of the player’s game. Your league’s settings control.

- On ESPN, check the League Manager lineup-lock setting; default individual locks are tied to each player’s scheduled game time.
- On Yahoo, confirm the league uses daily changes and check the player’s scheduled start time.
- In either platform, verify the exact deadline in your league rather than relying on the platform default.
Choose an eligible replacement
Start with your bench: a rostered backup tight end is usually the simplest option. Confirm that the player is eligible for the TE slot and that your lineup has room under the league’s roster rules. If you need to add someone from waivers, check the league’s position eligibility, transaction deadlines and roster limits before making the move.
When you have more than one eligible option, compare them on the factors that matter for your format:

- Chance to play and expected participation: Check the player’s current status and whether he is expected to be involved.
- Role and target opportunity: Prefer a meaningful opportunity in the offense over a name alone.
- Matchup: Consider the opposing defense, but do not treat matchup as a guarantee of production.
- Scoring fit: Your league’s scoring rules affect how to value catches, yardage and touchdowns.
- Game time: A later-starting player can preserve flexibility if your league uses individual game locks and the slot remains editable.
These are decision criteria, not a weekly ranking. A specific recommendation depends on current player information, scoring, roster and waiver availability.
Use a later game to preserve flexibility—carefully
If you are waiting on late news about another player, a later-starting replacement may keep the decision open longer under individual-lock rules. The slot still locks when that replacement’s game begins, however. A first-game-of-the-week or first-game-of-the-day lock removes that flexibility, so check your league rule before relying on kickoff timing.

Do not rely blindly on automatic lineup features
NFL Fantasy’s optional auto-swap feature uses a user-ranked backup list when a starter is projected for zero. ESPN Lineup Protection is limited to players marked Out or IR and eligible available bench players; ESPN describes it as not being a lineup optimizer. Check that the feature is enabled and that a suitable replacement is eligible instead of assuming automation will handle every late scratch.

Once an ESPN player slot is locked, the team manager cannot ordinarily edit it; ESPN says only the League Manager can make a change on the manager’s behalf. Make the replacement before the applicable kickoff or league-wide lock. If you have already missed it, contact your League Manager promptly, but do not assume an exception will be granted.
