The Valve-style Inkterface connects a 5.83-inch e-ink panel to an eInk Breakout Friend, then to an ESP32-S3 Feather; its LP803860 battery plugs into the Feather. The panel communicates with the Steam Machine over Bluetooth, so the display does not need a wired data connection to the host once assembled. A motherboard USB-header-powered community build uses different hardware and is not a drop-in wiring variant.
How the Valve-style front panel connects
The documented hardware chain is panel → eInk Breakout Friend → ESP32-S3 Feather. The panel does not connect directly to the Steam Machine. The specified parts are an Adafruit ESP32-S3 Feather with 2MB PSRAM, Adafruit eInk Breakout Friend, Adafruit 5.83-inch monochrome e-ink panel, and LP803860 battery. The reported build also uses thirteen M2.5 x 5mm pan-head screws, four 1/4 x 1/4 x 3/16-inch stepped magnets (model SB443-OUT), and printed faceplate, midplates, board plate, and retaining parts. These are the documented components, not a guarantee that another screen or battery with similar dimensions will work. Valve project documentation and a community fork reproducing assembly details describe the build.
Wire the display to the controller
- Seat the panel flex cable in the eInk breakout. Handle the flex carefully; do not bend or fold it.
- Connect the shared SPI and ground lines. Wire Feather MOSI, MISO, SCK, and GND to the corresponding breakout connections.
- Connect power. Wire Feather 3V3 to breakout VIN. The breakout’s 3V3 pin is an output, not the input for this connection.
- Connect control signals for your exact Feather revision. Use the matching pin map below, and confirm it against the board silkscreen and current firmware instructions before soldering.
- Install and retain the battery. Place the LP803860 in the printed assembly and plug it into the Feather.

The table lists logical pin numbers from the community fork’s reproduction of upstream assembly documentation; it does not replace the board-specific firmware environment or physical pin labels. The fork reports that Feather V1 and V2 can both be used, but their pin assignments differ. Check the fork’s assembly and firmware details for the revision you have.
Choose a power arrangement
Battery-powered Valve-style build
The reference parts list specifies the LP803860 battery, which plugs into the Feather. In this arrangement, the faceplate is self-contained and removable, and Bluetooth carries data between it and the Steam Machine. The host is not the faceplate’s normal wired data connection.

Separate community USB-header build
A community DIY build describes a Seeed Studio XIAO ePaper Display Board paired with a Waveshare 5.83-inch raw panel, reported at 648 × 480 pixels. Its author intends power from a motherboard USB header and says the build can instead use another power arrangement if it remains within Bluetooth range. This is a separate controller and firmware implementation, not evidence that the Waveshare panel is compatible with the Valve-style breakout or Feather wiring. See the community build report.
That report does not establish a universal USB-header pinout, power draw, fuse, runtime, or safe wiring diagram. Do not connect an e-ink panel directly to a USB header: the described community setup includes a controller/driver board. Match the chosen controller’s power input requirements and the battery or charging circuit used in that build.

How the front panel talks to the Steam Machine
The documented setup flashes firmware to the Feather, enables Bluetooth on the Steam Machine, launches the configuration application, discovers the panel, and installs a user service to send updates. The service can run in the background after setup, according to the community fork. Wired connections within the faceplate carry display signals and local power; Bluetooth is the host data link. A USB cable used to program the controller, or a USB-header feed in the separate community design, should not be mistaken for the normal Bluetooth data connection. Check compatibility before substituting parts
- Do not rely on diagonal size alone. Check the display connector, driver or breakout support, firmware, controller wiring, and mechanical dimensions. A different 5.83-inch panel may still be incompatible.
- Identify the Feather revision. V1 and V2 use different logical GPIO assignments; match the wiring to the firmware environment for that board.
- Protect the flex cable. Avoid bending or folding it during installation.
- Account for the enclosure. The printed structural pieces and retaining magnets are part of the assembly; different components may require different printed parts.
The available build descriptions do not establish a verified battery runtime, current draw, or measured thermal and power behavior for the Valve-style faceplate. Do not estimate those figures from generic claims about e-paper displays.

Keep other e-ink faceplates separate from this build
A September 22, 2026 report about JSAUX front panels describes an E Ink model refreshing about once per minute without a backlight, and a dot-matrix model refreshing about once per second and requiring USB-C power. Those are reported figures for those third-party products, not specifications for Valve’s Inkterface or e-paper displays generally. Read the Digital Citizen report.
