Troubleshoot the controller separately only if it also has pairing, charging, or response problems.
First, separate a game problem from a controller problem
If one game will not launch but the controller can navigate the console normally, start with the game. A controller does not normally determine whether a game is installed or updated, and controller replacement is not an established fix for those issues. If the controller also disconnects, will not pair, or fails to respond, follow the controller checks in the separate section below.

Sony’s published steps are for PS5 games and its DualSense wireless controller—not verified PS6 hardware or a “DualSense 2.0.” Use the support page for the platform and game format you actually have.
Check the game installation and software
For a downloaded game that freezes or crashes, Sony’s guidance starts with the game and console software rather than the controller:

- Confirm the game finished downloading and installing. An incomplete installation can prevent a game from starting properly.
- Check for a game update. Install any available update, then try launching the game again.
- Make sure the console system software is current. Follow the console’s system-software update instructions.
- Test whether the issue is tied to an existing save. If appropriate for the game, try starting from the beginning without loading the existing save. This can help identify a save-specific problem; it is not a reason to delete a save you want to keep.

Check the DualSense only if it has controller symptoms
Pairing, charging, or input problems call for controller troubleshooting; they do not by themselves show why a particular game will not launch. For a PS5 DualSense controller, Sony’s support flow includes these checks:

- Pair the controller with the PS5 and check that it is charged.
- Check for controller software updates through the console settings.
- Reset the controller if pairing or response problems persist.
- If using a cable for charging or connectivity troubleshooting, use one that supports data and synchronization—not a charge-only cable.

Sony also documents DualSense firmware updates and app troubleshooting through its PlayStation Accessories app support page. That PC app route is for controller or app behavior; it does not replace checking the game’s installation and updates.

If the controller continues to have pairing, charging, or response trouble after the official troubleshooting steps, use PlayStation Repairs through Sony’s controller support flow. If the controller works normally and only one game fails, continue with the game-specific support path instead.

Consider replacing a controller only if its own fault has been established. A PS5 DualSense is not verified here as a PS6 accessory, and buying a controller is not a substantiated fix for an incomplete download, missing game update, outdated system software, or a save-related problem.
