The choice is therefore less about exclusive story material and more about where you want to play, portability, and the convenience features attached to a particular edition. The available official information does not establish that PC or console is faster, more stable, or objectively better-looking.
What changes—and what does not—between versions?
Square Enix Support says that “the content of the game does not differ between platforms,” while graphical and optional settings can vary with hardware. That means the story and core game content are shared; platform differences are chiefly about presentation, controls and platform-specific conveniences rather than exclusive narrative content. See Square Enix Support’s cross-platform answer and its related explanation of content and settings.
This does not prove the editions look or run identically. Square Enix notes that hardware can affect graphics and optional settings, but the available official information does not offer a controlled comparison of resolution, frame rate, loading time or stability across current versions.
What platform-specific features are documented?
PlayStation 4
Square Enix’s North American PS4 support page documents HD movies and character models, autosave, trophy support, sharing, and Remote Play with PS Vita. It also lists seven optional boosters, including high-speed play, no encounters, mastering abilities, and maximizing levels, magic stones and gil. These are optional aids, not requirements for completing the game. The feature list is specifically for PS4; do not assume every current console edition has an identical set. See Square Enix’s PS4 feature list.

Xbox and Xbox Play Anywhere
Xbox’s listing identifies Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC and handheld as supported play environments. It also lists achievements, cloud saves and Xbox Play Anywhere. These are capabilities shown on the Xbox listing, not a guarantee about Steam or PlayStation editions. Store information may change; confirm the current listing for your account and device. The listing gives a release date of February 13, 2019. See Xbox’s store page and its listing details.
Boosters and other optional systems
Square Enix’s Japanese feature page describes Active Time Battle, Active Time Events, autosave, speed-up, debug and achievement functions, seven boosters, and minigames. It confirms that speed-up and no-encounter-style assistance are part of the feature set, but its language and scope are specific to that page; availability can vary by platform edition. See Square Enix’s Japanese feature page.

PC storefront editions
Steam’s listing identifies Square Enix as publisher and gives the PC release date as April 14, 2016. That information alone does not establish parity in optional features, mod support, current system requirements or performance versus console. See the Steam listing.
How to choose the version that suits you
| If you value… | Consider… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Playing on a computer you already use | PC | Choose the PC storefront and setup that fit your existing habits. The cited listings do not support a claim that PC runs better than console, or vice versa. |
| A particular living-room console or its ecosystem | That console’s edition | PS4 has documented trophies, sharing, autosave and PS Vita Remote Play; Xbox lists achievements, cloud saves and Play Anywhere. Check the specific current storefront listing for the edition you intend to buy. |
| Handheld play | A handheld-supported edition | Xbox’s listing names handheld among supported environments. For any other device or store, verify its current compatibility listing rather than assuming support. |
| Optional help with pace or encounters | An edition that lists the boosters you want | Square Enix documents speed-up and no-encounter options among its feature descriptions. Confirm availability on your exact platform edition before choosing on this basis. |
If portability is your deciding factor, check the current platform listing for the particular device you own. The cited information does not establish universal handheld support across all PC and console storefronts.

There is no substantiated, like-for-like set of current measurements here for resolution, frame rate, loading times, stability, controller behavior or PC mod compatibility. Square Enix’s note that graphics may differ by hardware is not a benchmark and does not identify a visual winner. Current prices and feature availability can also change by region and storefront, so check the store page for your location before purchasing.
Do not buy new hardware solely for Final Fantasy IX on the assumption that one platform is proven superior. The documented evidence supports shared game content and selected platform features, not a performance ranking.
