You do not have to choose one connection type: the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller works both wirelessly and over USB. Choose wireless if you want to sit wherever you like without routing a cable. Choose wired if your setup puts you near the dock or console and you prefer a direct cable connection. Nintendo documents how to use both modes, but does not publish a controlled comparison showing that wired play has lower latency, better reliability, or longer battery life.
Wired or wireless: which suits your setup?

The practical decision is about cable placement and the controller you already own—not a documented performance advantage. If you have an original Switch Pro Controller, try it before buying another. If you want to purchase a controller that Nintendo explicitly documents for both modes, look for the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, model BEE-008; Nintendo says it is compatible only with Switch 2.
How to connect the Switch 2 Pro Controller by cable
TV mode: connect to the dock
- Place the Nintendo Switch 2 console in its dock.
- Connect a USB-C to USB-A cable, model BEE-011, to one of the dock’s side USB ports.
- Connect the cable’s USB-C end to the port on top of the controller. Nintendo says wired use begins after the connection is made.
Tabletop mode: connect to the console
- Set the console on its stand.
- Connect a USB-C to USB-C cable from the console’s top USB-C port to the port on top of the controller. Nintendo specifies that this cable is sold separately.
Check the connectors and cable length before choosing tabletop wired play: this setup links the controller directly to the console. If you already own a suitable USB-C to USB-C cable, check it before purchasing another.
How to pair the Switch 2 Pro Controller wirelessly
- From the HOME Menu, open Controllers, then select Change Grip/Order.
- Hold the controller’s SYNC button for at least one second.
- Follow the on-screen pairing flow. Nintendo also documents pairing the controller through a USB connection.

Can you use an original Switch controller on Switch 2?
Original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
Yes. It is compatible with Switch 2 wirelessly. To use it as a wired controller, connect its USB charging cable and enable Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Wired Communication under System Settings > Controllers & Accessories. While it communicates over a wire, its NFC touchpoint is disabled. These instructions apply to the original controller, not the Switch 2 Pro Controller. Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con
Original Joy-Con can connect to Switch 2 wirelessly, but cannot attach to the Switch 2 body. To charge them, use an original Switch console or a suitable original Joy-Con charging accessory. Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2 compatibility information covers these limitations.

What changes for multiplayer?
Nintendo says a Switch 2 console can pair up to eight wireless controllers, but the number usable at once depends on controller type, features, and software. If a Bluetooth audio device is connected, Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance limits wireless controller connections to two. For that reason, treat eight as a pairing ceiling, not a guarantee that every game and setup can use eight controllers. See Nintendo’s controller pairing troubleshooting page.

- Choose wireless if you want flexible seating or do not want a cable between you and the console or dock.
- Choose wired if your seating is close to the dock or console and the specified cable can reach comfortably.
- Reuse an original Switch Pro Controller if you already own one; it works wirelessly, and wired use is available after enabling its setting.
- Check the exact model before buying: Nintendo identifies the Switch 2 Pro Controller as model BEE-008 and says it is only compatible with Switch 2. Confirm the model on the package or seller listing.
Nintendo’s official instructions explain connection methods but do not establish that either one is faster, more reliable, has greater range, or improves battery life. Avoid choosing based on those unverified performance assumptions.
