For the fishing and ocean side of Dave the Diver, choose DREDGE; for cooking and hospitality, try Travellers Rest; and for a more shop-focused adventure, consider Recettear: An Item Shop’s Tale.
What makes a game feel like Dave the Diver?
Dave the Diver combines daytime deep-sea exploration and fishing with nighttime sushi restaurant management, according to its Steam description. The appeal is the shift between going out to gather and coming back to turn what you found into a business.
These four games share parts of that loop, but none is a direct substitute for underwater fishing plus sushi service. The best choice depends on which half you want more of.
Which games are the closest matches?
Moonlighter: the closest exploration-to-shop loop
Moonlighter most directly links expeditions to retail. You explore dungeons and bring loot back to Rynoka, where you put items up for sale, set prices, manage stock and gold reserves, recruit assistants, and upgrade the shop. Its Steam listing explicitly describes these business decisions.
#1 Best Overall
- Complete Edition contains Dave the Diver, In the Jungle DLC, Dredge DLC, Godzilla DLC, Ichiban’s Holiday DLC, Digital Soundtrack, and Digital Artbook
- Explore and unravel the mysteries in the depths of the Blue Hole by day and run a successful exotic sushi restaurant by night
- Dive into the ever-changing Blue Hole and use a harpoon and other weapons to catch fish and various creatures
- Quirky but lovable characters and a lighthearted narrative deliver an approachable and enjoyable gameplay experience
- A combination of pixel and 3D graphics showcases breathtaking underwater scenery, with over 200 kinds of sea creatures and ample additional content including minigames, side quests, and multiple storylines
The major difference is the supply run: fantasy action-RPG combat and dungeon loot replace diving and fishing. Choose it if the satisfying part of Dave the Diver is gathering goods on an outing and then deciding how to sell them.
DREDGE: fishing and ocean exploration, without the shop
DREDGE is the closest pick for fishing and maritime exploration. Its progression includes catching fish, selling discoveries, completing quests, and upgrading your boat. The Steam description calls it a single-player fishing adventure with a sinister undercurrent.
Rank #2
- Explore the Mysterious Blue Hole - From tiny tropical fish to giant octopuses, the marine world is filled with diverse life! You never know what marine life you’ll encounter. Escape attacks from predatory species as you hunt for fresh sushi ingredients. Ancient relics that scatter the vast underwater world hint at even deeper mysteries.
- The Midnight Sushi Bar - Cook up delicious sushi dishes using fresh-caught ingredients. If enough word gets around, you may be visited by a special customer! Rack up sales at the sushi bar so you can delve deeper into the sea of unknown!
- Boat Skins – Decorate your fishing boat with popular GGST characters!
- Character Skins – Some customers may visit the sushi bar in GGST cosplay!
- Rhythm Game – You can play along with GGST’S soundtrack!
It is an adventure rather than a shop-management game: the cited description does not establish a business loop comparable to running a store or restaurant. Pick it for the sea, fishing, and a darker atmosphere, not for customer service or active pricing.
Travellers Rest: run a tavern and make what you serve
Travellers Rest focuses on building and operating a fantasy tavern. You craft, farm, cook, build, and serve customers; journeys can also yield useful items. Its Steam listing sums up the activity as “Craft, farm, build and cook!”
Rank #3
- An adventure, RPG, management hybrid - Explore and unravel the mysteries in the depths of the Blue Hole by day and run a successful exotic sushi restaurant by night. It’s easy to get hooked on the satisfying gameplay loop!
- Casual combat and gathering gameplay with rogue-like elements - Dive into the ever-changing Blue Hole and use a harpoon and other weapons to catch fish and various creatures. Upgrade and forge equipment with collected resources and sushi restaurant profits to prepare for the dangers that lurk in the unknown. Running out of oxygen means leaving collected items and fish behind!
- Eccentric characters with a lighthearted narrative - Quirky but lovable characters and a story full of in-jokes, spoofs, and other humorous scenes provide an approachable and enjoyable gameplay experience
- A beautiful sea environment with attractive 2D/3D Art - A combination of pixel and 3D graphics provides a stunning art style that showcases breathtaking underwater scenery. This oceanic adventure is set in the real marine environment of a Blue Hole filled with over 200 kinds of sea creatures
- Ample additional content to complement the main gameplay loop - Minigames, side quests, and multiple storylines provide many hours of entertainment and varied gameplay
Unlike Moonlighter, exploration supports the hospitality and crafting loop rather than serving as a repeated expedition that directly stocks a shop. The listing presents the game in an Early Access context, so check its current storefront details if that status matters to you.
Recettear: an item shop supplied by dungeon runs
Recettear: An Item Shop’s Tale puts retail at the center. You manage stock and prices, while dungeon trips with adventurers provide one way to obtain merchandise. Its Steam description highlights managing an item shop, including its stock and interior design.
Its focus is debt repayment, item sales, and dungeon crawling—not fishing or restaurant service. Choose it when you want shopkeeping to be the main activity and adventuring to be a route to more goods.
