Which Wi-Fi Router Settings Improve Wireless PC VR Streaming?

For wireless PC VR, wire the gaming PC to the router and put the headset on a clear 5 GHz network. Choose a local low-congestion channel, test channel width carefully, and use 6 GHz only when both devices support Wi-Fi 6E and the headset is nearby.

For smoother wireless PC VR, connect the gaming PC to the router by Ethernet and connect the headset to a clear, strong 5 GHz network. Choose a channel based on nearby Wi-Fi activity, then test channel width in stages: 40 MHz before 80 MHz. Wider channels can carry more data, but may be less stable when the headset is far from the router or the airwaves are busy.

Start with the connection layout

Wire the PC to the router

Keep the headset wireless, but connect the gaming PC to the router with Ethernet wherever possible. That avoids making PC-to-router traffic compete with the headset’s stream over the same Wi-Fi radio. Steam’s setup instructions put it plainly: “You’ll need a router with a wired connection to your PC, and a 5GHz WiFi network for your headset.” Steam’s Steam Link announcement gives this baseline for Steam Link.

Keep the headset and PC on the same local network so they can communicate. This is distinct from internet speed: a fast internet plan does not fix a weak or congested local wireless link.

Use 5 GHz for the headset

5 GHz is the best starting band for the streaming link: it generally offers more throughput and less congestion than 2.4 GHz, which is often shared by many household devices. The trade-off is range. A 5 GHz signal does not reach as far or pass through obstacles as effectively as 2.4 GHz, so keep the router reasonably close to the play area and avoid unnecessary walls between them. Microsoft’s home Wi-Fi guidance explains the range and layout trade-offs.

TP-Link AXE5400 Tri-Band WiFi 6E Router, 2025 PCMag Editors' Choice
  • Tri-Band WiFi 6E Router - Up to 5400 Mbps WiFi for faster browsing, streaming, gaming and downloading, all at the same time(6 GHz: 2402 Mbps;5 GHz: 2402 Mbps;2.4 GHz: 574 Mbps)
  • WiFi 6E Unleashed – The 6 GHz band brings more bandwidth, faster speeds, and near-zero latency; Enables more responsive gaming and video chatting
  • Connect More Devices—True Tri-Band and OFDMA technology increase capacity by 4 times to enable simultaneous transmission to more devices
  • Unique Design, More RAM, Better Processing - A unique housing design provides optimal heat dissipation, combined with a 1.0 GHz dual-core CPU and 512 MB High-Speed Memory, the AXE75 is designed for long-term reliability and performance.
  • EasyMesh-compatible - Extend network range even more by adding EasyMesh-compatible routers, extenders, or wireless powerline adapters for a seamless, whole-home connection. Eliminate dead zones, drops, and lag as you move across your home.

If your router combines bands under one network name and the headset keeps switching between them, give the 5 GHz band its own SSID if the router allows it. Then select that network directly on the headset. Separate names make it easier to confirm which band the headset is using.

Choose a channel for the room you play in

There is no universally best 5 GHz channel. Nearby access points, local rules, router firmware and headset support all affect which choices are available and how well they work. Use your router’s channel scan or a Wi-Fi analyzer to identify less busy options, and judge the result in the actual play area.

Steam suggests looking at the upper part of the 5 GHz band, starting at channel 149. That is a useful option to test when available, not a guarantee that it will beat a less crowded channel elsewhere. Steam’s suggested network settings also advise choosing a channel with low congestion. Microsoft similarly recommends selecting a 5 GHz channel with few competing access points.

  • New Congestion-Free 6 GHz Band Provides High-Speed Connections
  • 2.5 Gbps WAN/LAN Ethernet Port for High-speed Internet Plans
  • True Tri-Band Speeds up to 7.8 Gbps (7800 Mbps) with WiFi 6E (802.11AX)
  • Tri-Band Speed for More Devices with Backhaul to Support up to 200 Devices

Do not treat channel 44, 149 or a DFS channel as a universal answer. NVIDIA names 44 or 149 in its CloudXR networking guidance, but that advice is for its specific XR configuration. Available channels and client behavior vary by region and equipment; test options your router and headset both support.

Adjust channel width one step at a time

Channel width controls how much spectrum a Wi-Fi channel occupies. A wider channel has greater potential throughput, but it also has more exposure to interference and can be less dependable at longer range. Do not assume that the widest setting will deliver the smoothest stream.

  1. If the router is set to 20 MHz, test 40 MHz. Steam suggests this as the first width change.
  2. If 40 MHz is stable, try 80 MHz if the router and headset support it.
  3. Compare in the same room and conditions. Change one setting at a time and check for stutters or fluctuations during play.
  4. Return to the narrower stable width if a wider setting makes performance less consistent.

These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed performance gains. Microsoft recommends 80 MHz for Mixed Reality Link, but that product-specific recommendation does not establish 80 MHz as the best setting for Steam Link, Meta Air Link or Virtual Desktop.

Use 6 GHz only with compatible devices nearby

Wi-Fi 6E adds access to 6 GHz, which can be attractive where 5 GHz is crowded. Both the router and the headset must support Wi-Fi 6E to use it, and the shorter range makes placement especially important: it is most promising when the headset stays close to the access point with few obstacles.

6 GHz is optional, not a prerequisite for Steam Link. Steam lists 5 GHz and Wi-Fi 5 as minimums, with Wi-Fi 6 or 6E recommended on its Steam Link headset support page. Microsoft’s 6 GHz recommendation applies to Mixed Reality Link and should not be read as a requirement for other PC VR apps.

Improve placement before replacing the router

  • Move the router or access point closer to the play area and place it centrally and higher up where practical.
  • Reduce obstacles between the access point and headset, especially walls and metal objects.
  • Avoid hiding the router under a desk or in a corner.
  • After moving it, retest the same channel and width before changing additional settings.

A better signal path can matter more than buying a newer router. A hardware upgrade cannot compensate for a wireless PC connection, poor placement, incompatible bands or a locally congested channel.

Whereas the advantages of WiFi 6 are not fully realized while competing with transmissions from WiFi 5 (or other radios). The 6 GHz band is available only for WiFi 6 traffic, allowing WiFi 6 to meet its intended potential

Leave advanced settings alone unless there is a reason

NVIDIA’s CloudXR guide advises disabling client isolation so clients can reach the server, and suggests prioritizing UDP with QoS if available. These are recommendations for CloudXR’s networking context, not universal settings for every headset or streaming app. If the PC and headset can already see each other and the stream has no specific connectivity problem, avoid changing advanced controls without a clear reason.

Quick reference: which setting should you try?

Setting Potential benefit Trade-off When to use it
2.4 GHz Longer reach and better obstacle penetration Typically more congested and offers less throughput Use for the streaming link only when reliable 5 GHz is unavailable
5 GHz Good throughput and broad headset support Shorter range; local channel congestion still matters Recommended starting band for the headset
6 GHz / Wi-Fi 6E Can avoid congestion and perform well nearby Requires compatible router and headset; shorter reach through obstacles Optional test when both devices support it and the headset is close
40 MHz More capacity than 20 MHz in Steam’s suggested progression May still share congested spectrum First incremental width test when starting at 20 MHz
80 MHz Greater potential throughput More sensitive to distance and interference; not guaranteed to be smoother Try if 40 MHz is stable and both devices support it

These settings are starting points and diagnostic changes, not promises of a particular latency or frame-rate improvement. Router menus and channel availability differ by manufacturer, firmware and region.
