You still need access to a PS2 to dump its BIOS, plus discs from your own collection or images made from those discs. If you have neither a PS2 for the BIOS step nor access to a dumped BIOS, PCSX2 is not a ready-to-use, console-free solution.
Which option fits your situation?
| Route | What you need | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| PCSX2 on a computer | A compatible Windows, macOS, or Linux computer, a BIOS dumped from your own PS2, and PS2 discs or images made from them. | You want to run PS2 games locally on a computer. |
| Play a disc in PCSX2 | A PS2 disc and a computer optical drive that supports the disc’s CD or DVD format, as applicable. | You already have a compatible drive and want to try playing directly from disc. |
| Load a disc image in PCSX2 | A PS2 disc, a compatible optical drive, and a disc image made from the disc. | You prefer the disc-image workflow PCSX2 recommends in some cases. |
| PS Remote Play | A PS5 or PS4, the Remote Play app, an account, a network connection, and a controller. | You want to control a PS5 or PS4 remotely—not emulate PS2 games on a computer. |
PCSX2 is the strongest-documented route here, not necessarily the only emulator or device option available. The available official material does not establish one universally best alternative handheld or mobile emulator.
What you need for PCSX2
A compatible computer
PCSX2 supports Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its first-run wizard guides setup after installation; Linux builds include AppImage and Flatpak options. The project notes that Flatpak file-access issues can occur. Follow the current PCSX2 running guide for the platform-specific steps and current interface.
The system requirements page distinguishes minimum, moderate, and heavy hardware tiers. Its minimum tier lists an x86-64 CPU with SSE4.1, a single-thread PassMark score of at least 1500, two physical CPU cores with SMT, 8 GB of RAM, and a GPU supporting Vulkan 1.1, Direct3D 11, or OpenGL 3.3 with a PassMark G3D Mark score of at least 600. Moderate and heavy tiers list 16 GB of RAM and call for stronger CPU and GPU capability. The page treats M-series Macs as an exception to the x86 SIMD requirement and maps their CPU tier to heavy.

- WORKS WITH PS2 & PS1 — PHAT AND SLIM — Connect your PS2 (both original Phat and Slim models) or PS1 directly to any modern HDTV, monitor, or projector via HDMI. No drivers required. Just plug in and play your classic game library on your modern display within minutes.
- WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE PICTURE — This adapter converts your PS2/PS1's analog AV signal to HDMI so it works on modern TVs. The PS2 hardware outputs a standard-definition signal (480p max) — the adapter upscales this to 720p for a cleaner look, but cannot go beyond the console's own limits. Great for retro gaming; not a 4K upgrade.
- 4:3 / 16:9 ASPECT RATIO SWITCH — One button to toggle between classic 4:3 and widescreen 16:9 display. Supports 480p and 720p resolution output. Low-latency signal processing for responsive, lag-free gameplay — ideal for action and rhythm games where timing matters.
- POWER REQUIRED — PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING — This adapter requires an external DC 5V/1A USB power source to operate. A USB cable is included; a USB power adapter is NOT included. Use any standard phone charger or plug into your TV's USB port. No power = no signal output.
- IMPORTANT — PS2 AND PS1 ONLY — Works exclusively via the PS2/PS1 AV output port. Does NOT support PS3, PS4, or PS5. Does NOT work with HDMI capture cards, splitters, or passthrough devices — connect directly from console to TV. Not compatible with BlackMagic brand displays.
These are tiers on PCSX2’s current requirements page, not a guarantee that every game will run well on hardware that meets the minimum. Game workload varies; GPU demand also rises with upscaling level and blending accuracy. Check the live requirements for your intended settings and the compatibility entry for the game you want to play.
A BIOS dumped from a PS2
PCSX2 requires a BIOS file dumped from a PlayStation 2. Its project documentation says the BIOS is proprietary and there is no open-source substitute; the emulator does not work out of the box without the file. The documented process runs a BIOS-dumping utility on the console and transfers the resulting files to a USB drive or over a network. The project recommends softmod approaches such as FreeMcBoot or FreeDVDBoot for running the utility. Their compatibility varies by console model, so check the official BIOS guide before choosing a method or memory card.

Your game discs or images made from them
PCSX2 can load original PS2 discs directly, but its FAQ says direct disc play can cause speed problems because the computer’s drive does not keep spinning as a PS2 would. The project recommends making an image in some cases. Its disc-dumping guide explains how to create one with a standard optical drive that supports the relevant CD and DVD media.
Use discs from your collection or a legitimate resale source. Do not treat a BIOS or game image downloaded from an unauthorized site as an alternative to obtaining the required files properly.

How to set up PCSX2
- Check your game and computer. Look up the exact title on the PCSX2 compatibility list and compare your computer with the current requirements, especially if you plan to upscale.
- Install the official PCSX2 build for your operating system. Use the current running guide; follow its first-run wizard after installation. On Linux, choose an available distribution such as AppImage or Flatpak, keeping in mind the project’s note about possible Flatpak file-access issues.
- Dump the BIOS from your own PS2. Follow the BIOS guide to run its utility on the console and transfer the files. Confirm that the suggested softmod method supports your particular PS2 model.
- Prepare the game. Insert a personal PS2 disc and try direct loading, or use a compatible optical drive to make a disc image following the disc guide. An image may avoid the speed problems noted for some direct-disc play.
- Load the BIOS and game in PCSX2. Complete the setup wizard and select the BIOS and game media according to the current interface. If the title does not start or behaves unexpectedly, consult its compatibility entry before changing settings.
Check compatibility before troubleshooting performance
Compatibility and speed are game-specific. PCSX2’s repository currently reports more than 2,500 titles tested, but that project-reported count does not mean every title works perfectly. Check the game’s individual status on the compatibility list first; then compare your hardware and intended graphics settings with the requirements page.
- The game will not launch: verify that PCSX2 has a valid BIOS dump and that the disc or image is accessible, then check the title’s compatibility entry.
- Playback is slow from a physical disc: PCSX2 reports that direct-disc playback can have speed issues. Try making and loading an image from your disc instead.
- Performance is poor with upscaling: GPU load depends substantially on upscaling level and blending accuracy. Check the requirements guidance for your target settings rather than relying only on the minimum tier.
- Linux Flatpak cannot access files: the project notes that file-access problems can occur with Flatpak. Consult the current running guide for platform-specific setup.
Why PS Remote Play is not a PS2 alternative
Sony’s Remote Play instructions for PC and Mac cover connecting to and controlling a PS5 or PS4 over a network. They do not describe running PS2 games locally or streaming from a PS2. Remote Play therefore requires access to a supported PS5 or PS4 and does not solve the problem if you have no PlayStation console.

- PS2 Adapter: Convert PlayStation1/2/3 signal to HDMI signal (sony playstation game console connection to HDTV)
- No need to install drivers, portable, flexible, plug and play.
- PS2 to HDMI Converter: Support HDMI 16:9/ 4:3 output switch.
- NOTE: Compatible with PlayStation1/2/3 only.(Note: It's just a converter, you also can play PS1 games on PS2)
- RGB signal mode display. Video signal transfer only, can't improve the video quality.
What to know about legality
The PCSX2 documentation describes the technical process as using a BIOS dumped from your own console and games from your collection, played from discs or images made from them. That guidance does not settle copyright, backup, or download rules in every country. Do not assume that owning a disc automatically makes every copy or download lawful where you live; check the rules that apply in your jurisdiction.
