Last Asylum: Plague is a mobile survival and sanctuary-management game. You treat survivors, gather supplies, rebuild your refuge, develop heroes, defend against Rat Swarm attacks, and send squads into ruined territory. Its official site sums up the loop as “Treat survivors, gather supplies, upgrade your refuge, and lead heroes into ruined territory.”
How does Last Asylum: Plague gameplay work?
The game connects several activities rather than focusing on combat alone. Treatment and resource production support sanctuary upgrades; those upgrades and hero development help you prepare for defense and exploration.
- Treat survivors: Keep care facilities working so the sanctuary can handle patients.
- Gather and produce supplies: Resources such as food, timber, and herbs support treatment and construction.
- Develop the sanctuary: Upgrade the hub and its supporting buildings to advance progression.
- Build a hero squad: Improve heroes for combat and exploration.
- Defend and explore: Prepare for Rat Swarm attacks and send squads beyond the walls.
The official Last Asylum site describes the core loop, while the game listing also presents the game as a mobile experience.
What should beginners prioritize?
Build a sustainable resource base
Start by improving production for food, timber, and herbs. Add storage capacity so resources do not reach their limit before you can use them. Raise Sanctuary levels when the supporting economy can sustain the next tier, rather than pushing the hub while production is lagging.

Keep treatment capacity ready
Ward and treatment capacity should keep pace with patient demand. If care facilities are already strained, growing the sanctuary without addressing that bottleneck can leave the settlement poorly prepared for its core task.
Invest in a main squad
Concentrate hero-upgrade resources on a functional main squad instead of spreading them across every recruit. The beginner guide suggests a general role balance of a durable front line, damage, and support. It is a starting point, not a universally optimal lineup: the best choices depend on the heroes available and the current game balance.

Prepare for Rat Swarm waves
Build hero strength and set up defenses before major swarm attacks. The beginner guide specifically recommends preparing tower choke points ahead of waves; do not wait until an attack is imminent to consider your defenses.
Should you rush Sanctuary levels?
Not if your production, storage, or treatment capacity cannot support the next step. Sanctuary progression is tied to the buildings and capacities around it, so check the requirements for the next level and address the weakest supporting system first. A third-party Last Asylum Wiki says Sanctuary level gates building and hero levels and depends on Research Lab and clinic stars. Treat those requirements as wiki-reported and version-sensitive, not as an official current upgrade table.

How many heroes and buildings are there?
The Last Asylum Wiki reported 32 heroes and 46 buildings in 2026. These are third-party counts, not official specifications, and could change with updates. The available sources do not establish current numeric tables for upgrade costs, unlock requirements, or hero rankings, so avoid relying on fixed numbers or tier lists without checking the live game.
