There is no objectively best video game soundtrack for studying, winding down, or imagining a game world. The useful question is whether a score’s energy, texture, and changes suit what you are doing. The examples below are recommendations and composer descriptions, not proof that a soundtrack improves concentration, lowers stress, or produces a particular emotional response.

For focus or studying
Begin with ambient, restrained, or gently repetitive music, and pay attention to how often the sound shifts sharply. University of Central Florida Associate Professor of Music Theory Will Ayers recommends Fez as a go-to for working, reading, and studying, describing its intensity as suitable for a deep study session. He points to Antichamber for its ambient soundtrack and expansive soundscapes, and UCF describes Stardew Valley as having calming tunes suited to a day’s work. These are Ayers’s recommendations, not measured evidence of a general effect on study performance. Read UCF’s study-listening recommendations.
Try a quiet passage and a more energetic one. If changes keep pulling your attention from reading or writing, choose a less dynamic selection or make a playlist from quieter tracks.

For relaxation
Look for delicate textures, slower-feeling passages, or a mood you personally experience as calm. Ayers recommends Flower, describing its soundtrack as delicate and its interactive audio as aligned with the ongoing music. He also describes Stardew Valley as offering calming tunes. If you prefer a darker atmosphere, you might sample Limbo; Ayers notes that its soundtrack can haunt as well as comfort, so it will not suit every listener’s idea of relaxing. UCF’s soundtrack recommendations are a starting point, not a universal ranking.
For immersion
Choose music whose atmosphere, timbres, and emotional tone invite you to imagine a place or follow a narrative. Returnal composer Bobby Krlic said he wanted listeners to experience the album’s “mystery, the journey, the payoff” even without playing the game. He also explained that the album drew on the game’s narrative and presented pieces in a different order and form from their in-game appearance. That is the creative aim for this release, not a guaranteed reaction from every listener. Read PlayStation’s interview with Bobby Krlic.

Compare soundtracks by how they sound, not just by genre
When you are deciding between albums or building a playlist, listen for these differences:
- Intensity and contrast: Is energy fairly even, or do loud, tense passages arrive often?
- Texture and density: Are the sounds sparse and ambient, gently melodic, rhythmically busy, or orchestral and full?
- Change over time: Does the music loop steadily, evolve gradually, or respond to events in the game?
- Mood and associations: Does it feel soothing, curious, melancholy, ominous, triumphant, or otherwise right for your activity?
- Album flow: Does the official album work as a continuous listen, or would selected tracks suit you better?
These are practical listening criteria rather than an objective scoring system. A soundtrack that feels calming to one person may feel melancholy or distracting to another.

Why an album can feel different from playing the game
Game scores can change dynamically in response to play, so an album sequence may include shifts that make more sense in the game than as background listening. Composer Winifred Phillips describes Spyder using short ambient pieces during exploration and layered action music that builds momentum as play progresses. She explains that the team did not want music to be “in your face all the time” during quiet exploration. This is one example of why it helps to sample the album’s peaks and transitions before choosing it for a particular task. Read GameDeveloper’s interview with Phillips.

An album release may be edited and mixed for listening outside the game rather than reproducing exactly what you hear while playing. Krlic said the Returnal album included unique mixes created for the album format. For a different release model, FromSoftware lead sound designer and composer Tsukasa Saito announced a 67-track Elden Ring soundtrack album available on streaming services worldwide on September 9, 2022. These are examples of releases at those dates, not guarantees of present-day availability; check your service and region. Krlic on the Returnal album · Saito on the Elden Ring score and album.

Physical editions are another option if you collect records or want a particular album on vinyl; they are not necessary to enjoy a soundtrack. PlayStation’s 2016 announcement for the Bound soundtrack documented digital and vinyl editions, establishing vinyl as one format in which game soundtracks have been released. It does not establish current stock or prices. Search for the exact game, edition, and territory, and verify availability before buying. See PlayStation’s Bound soundtrack announcement.
