Steam’s Top Sellers list ranks games by revenue—not by copies sold, owners, or active players. Revenue can include a game’s editions, DLC, and in-game transactions, so the chart can feature a free-to-play game or a standalone DLC entry. To interpret a rank, check which chart you’re viewing, its region, and its time period.
What does Steam’s Top Sellers rank mean?
Valve says Steam’s real-time Top Sellers lists rank games by total revenue, including revenue from all editions, DLC, and in-game transactions. The method also applies to Top Sellers tabs on the store and to genre and tag pages. Valve announced the chart method on September 22, 2022.
That means the chart is not a tally of base-game purchases. A title can earn revenue through several products and purchases associated with it; if a particular DLC sells well enough, Steam may list that DLC separately. The public explanation does not disclose a precise ranking formula or each title’s revenue or unit sales. It also does not specify whether the figure is gross or net of refunds, or define the live chart’s calculation window. So a rank shows relative revenue performance in the selected chart context, not an exact sales total.
Why is a free game on Steam’s Top Sellers list?
“Free to Play” describes the game’s entry price, not necessarily the revenue it generates. Valve says the earlier approach counted premium game purchases but missed revenue from free or inexpensive games whose players bought season passes, large expansions, or other new content. The current format includes those sources, and combines a game’s editions to reduce duplicate entries. Read Valve’s explanation of the free-to-play change.

As a result, a free-to-play game can rank highly when its qualifying additional purchases generate substantial revenue. Its rank still does not tell you how many people play it.
What the chart columns tell you
Steam describes its live list as the “Top 100 selling games right now, by revenue.” Its visible columns provide context, not a sales ledger. The live Top Sellers page shows rank, price, change, and weeks.
Rank #2
- Rank: The title’s relative position in the selected revenue chart; Steam does not publish the revenue amount in this column.
- Price: The displayed current price or free-to-play status. Price alone cannot explain a rank because editions, DLC, and in-game purchases also count.
- Change: Positions gained or lost since the previous week, according to Valve—not a percentage change in sales.
- Weeks: How long a title has appeared on the Top Sellers chart. It does not show accumulated revenue or copies sold.
Prices and live ranks can change, and a displayed price may reflect a discount. Treat a chart view as a snapshot rather than a permanent ordering.
Why region and time period matter
Choose the geography before comparing ranks
Steam provides country-specific lists for popular Steam countries to reflect regional differences. The chart defaults to the user’s country when a chart is available, and users can switch to the global list or another country’s view. Valve describes the regional charts and selection. A rank in one country is not interchangeable with a rank in another or with the global chart.
Rank #3
Distinguish the live chart from the weekly chart
The live page uses the label “right now,” but Valve does not publish a precise calculation window for that ranking. The weekly Top Sellers chart has a defined period: revenue earned from Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific to the following Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific. It also reports consecutive weeks on the chart and movement versus the prior week. See Valve’s description of the weekly charts.
For a fair comparison, keep the metric, geography, and time window consistent. A live rank and a Monday-to-Monday weekly rank answer different questions.

Top Sellers versus Most Played
Steam’s Top Sellers and Most Played charts measure different things. Valve describes real-time Most Played by the number of players in a game right now; a daily view can rank games by unique players over the preceding 24 hours. Valve outlines these chart types.
| Chart | Metric | What it helps answer |
|---|---|---|
| Real-time Top Sellers | Total revenue, including editions, DLC, and in-game transactions | Which games are generating the most revenue in the selected chart context |
| Real-time Most Played | Players in a game right now | Which games have the largest current player counts |
| Daily player view | Unique players over the preceding 24 hours | Which games had the largest recent player counts |
| Weekly Top Sellers | Revenue earned from Monday 10 a.m. Pacific to the following Monday 10 a.m. Pacific | Which games ranked highest by revenue over that defined week |
Use Most Played when you want a player-count measure; use Top Sellers when you want Steam’s revenue ranking. Neither is a review score or a direct measure of a game’s quality or lasting popularity.

What a high rank does—and doesn’t—establish
A high Top Sellers position establishes only that a title ranked relatively well by revenue in the selected chart, region, and period. It does not establish an exact number of copies sold, the size of the active player base, lifetime sales, or a game’s quality. Revenue from add-ons and in-game purchases can affect the ranking even when the base game is free.
Steam’s charts overview separates live Top Sellers, Most Played, weekly charts, monthly Top New Releases, and yearly retrospectives. These are different chart products, not interchangeable versions of one popularity ranking. View Steam’s charts overview.
