Why a Game’s Music Can Feel at Odds With Its Visuals

Game music can feel wrong for a scene because its theme, emotion, or timing clashes with the visuals or player action. Sometimes that tension is intentional.

A game’s music can feel wrong for a scene when its theme, emotion, or timing clashes with what you see—or with what you are doing. That clash is not automatically a mistake: it can weaken the sense of atmosphere, but composers also use uncertainty and contrast to create tension.

What “at odds” can mean

A soundtrack may seem mismatched in more than one way. Separating the kind of mismatch helps explain why it feels distracting in one moment and effective in another.

  • Theme: The music and visuals suggest different settings, genres, or symbolic worlds.
  • Emotion: A cue’s mood opposes or complicates the feeling the scene appears to present.
  • Timing: The music does not line up with a visual event or the player’s action—or continues independently of them.

These are distinct kinds of dissonance; they need not have the same cause or effect.

Why thematic fit can shape atmosphere

A 2020 study by Ribeiro, Rogers, Altmeyer, Terkildsen, and Nacke examined audiovisual thematic cohesion in two independent-measures experiments involving 109 participants. The authors report that lower thematic fit reduced perceived atmosphere. They also found that audiovisual dissonance could produce higher-intensity negative-valence facial events, while not changing participants’ self-reported player experience or immersion. Those findings describe the study’s conditions, not a universal response to every soundtrack mismatch.

That distinction matters: a mismatch can make a scene feel less coherent without necessarily making players report that they are less immersed. The study does not show that every player reacts alike or that every contrast damages a game’s atmosphere. Read the study record for “Game Atmosphere: Effects of Audiovisual Thematic Cohesion on Player Experience and Psychophysiology.”

Why timing includes the player

In a game, synchronization is not only a matter of matching sound to image. K. J. Donnelly’s Cambridge University Press chapter summary describes a “triple lock” among audio, image, and player input. A cue can therefore feel off because it ignores what the player just did, even if its mood and style suit the setting. Unlike a fixed film scene, the game’s action may vary from player to player, and music systems may respond to that action—or continue without doing so.

Donnelly’s chapter, “The Triple Lock of Synchronization,” discusses this three-part relationship.

How composers connect music to gameplay

Scoring to movement can help music feel connected to play. Composer Winifred Phillips has said she pays attention to gameplay and wants her music to “compliment the visual kinetics.” In an interview with Game Developer, she describes ways to connect ambient and combat cues: carry shared motifs between them, keep the ambient mood relatively neutral, and use transition elements to bridge the change in intensity.

Those techniques do not require every beat to mirror an on-screen event. They give players a musical thread across changing activity, making a shift into combat feel related to the world they were already in.

When the mismatch is deliberate

Music that does not reliably land on an action can create unease rather than break the scene. Composer and audio designer Emily Ridgway described BioShock using a linear string figure whose timing sometimes coincided with a player action—such as a wrench swing or an enemy reveal—and sometimes did not. The apparent near-matches and misses made the relationship feel unsettling; precise synchronization was not the goal. Ridgway said of those outcomes, “And in each of these cases, that was what I wanted.”

Her example shows why “out of sync” is not always a flaw. A cue can make the player feel watched, uncertain, or unable to predict what comes next precisely because it does not consistently follow the action. Read the Game Audio Network Guild interview with Ridgway.

How to tell whether it works

There is no universal test for a successful mismatch, but these listening questions can help identify what the music is doing:

  • Theme: Do the sound and visuals point toward the same world, or is their difference meaningful?
  • Emotion: Does the score reinforce the scene’s apparent feeling, deliberately complicate it, or seem unrelated?
  • Timing: Does the cue follow a visual event or player input, or does it continue independently?
  • Effect: Does the contrast create suspense or unease, or does it make the moment feel unintentionally incoherent?

The answers depend on the scene’s apparent purpose and the effect the music produces. A mismatch can be purposeful even when it feels uncomfortable; discomfort alone does not establish whether the choice succeeds.
