Take-Two identified him as Rockstar’s Vice President, Creative when it announced his departure; reporting describes him as lead writer on GTA titles from Grand Theft Auto III onward and both Red Dead Redemption games.
Who is Dan Houser?
Houser is best known for helping build Rockstar Games and shaping the writing of some of its best-known open-world series. He was a co-founder of the studio and held the title Vice President, Creative before leaving in 2020. The Guardian’s account of his work identifies him as lead writer on Grand Theft Auto titles from Grand Theft Auto III onward, as well as both Red Dead Redemption games. The Guardian’s 2025 interview places his later projects in a broader storytelling career spanning games, audio, books and comics.

What games did Dan Houser work on?
The clearest documented picture is at franchise level, rather than a definitive title-by-title credit list. Houser’s Rockstar legacy centers on Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. In a 2025 interview, he also singled out Grand Theft Auto IV, Grand Theft Auto V, both Red Dead Redemption games, their additional packs, and Max Payne 3 as part of a particularly exciting period of writing.
That recollection indicates projects he valued, but it is not a complete credits record and does not specify his role on every individual release. It is more accurate to describe him as a leading writer on Rockstar’s major franchises than to claim an exhaustive list of game credits without checking each game’s original credits.

Projects that never shipped
Houser has also discussed work that did not become released games. GameSpot’s recap of his 2025 interview says an unfinished Grand Theft Auto V expansion featuring Trevor as a secret agent was abandoned when it was about halfway complete. The recap also says Agent and a medieval-themed Rockstar game did not reach release. These belong to the history of unrealized development, not to a list of games players can buy or play.
GameSpot’s recap attributes these details to Houser’s interview; they should be understood as his account of abandoned projects, not as released credits.
Why did Dan Houser leave Rockstar?
Take-Two’s filing dated February 4, 2020 said Houser would leave after an extended break that began in spring 2019, and gave March 11, 2020 as his last day. The filing records the timing, but not a single definitive cause for his departure.
Houser later described Rockstar as his life for about 21 years. Speaking to the Guardian, he said that working in full production on projects from start to finish for 20 years had been intense, and that it was probably the right time to try other things. That is his explanation of the moment, rather than evidence of one specific dispute or event. In a separate interview, he recalled 2001–2005 as an especially exciting period of creative and business experimentation.

After leaving Rockstar, Houser formed Absurd Ventures, a company developing stories across different media. Its projects show a move beyond games alone, though their status and schedules should be read as reported at the time, not as guaranteed release plans.
A Better Paradise: audio fiction, novel and game
A Better Paradise began as a dystopian story world introduced in a 12-part audio fiction series. Houser adapted it into A Better Paradise Volume One: An Aftermath, his debut novel based on that series. In a March 11, 2025 interview with Publishers Weekly, he said a game set in the same universe was in development and would take several more years. Publishers Weekly’s interview is the dated source for that development estimate; it does not establish the game’s current status or release date.
American Caper and other story worlds
The Guardian’s December 2025 report describes American Caper, a comic series Houser co-wrote with former Rockstar collaborator Lazlow, and says Houser was considering a story game in that setting. The report also mentions another action-comedy world and game concept under Absurd Ventures. Those are project descriptions and plans reported at that date, not confirmation of finished or released games.

The sources cited here do not establish that Houser wrote Grand Theft Auto VI. His last day at Rockstar was March 11, 2020, but a departure date alone does not confirm a specific game’s writing credits. Take-Two’s December 2023 announcement said the game was then planned for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2025; that is a dated announcement, not current release information. Rockstar’s announcement also reported that Grand Theft Auto V had sold more than 190 million units and the Red Dead Redemption franchise more than 81 million units worldwide at that point. Those are publisher figures from 2023, not current totals.

Houser’s importance is not just a matter of association with popular games: reporting identifies him as a lead writer across Rockstar’s defining crime and western franchises. His own reflections point to two different sides of that career: an early period of experimentation and a later stretch of sustained production involving major sequels, add-ons and Max Payne 3. After Rockstar, Absurd Ventures gave him a way to develop narrative worlds across audio, print, comics and games rather than working within a single game series.
