How to Fix Multiplayer Disconnects and Progress Loss in The Outlast Trials

In Escalation, try to rejoin within five minutes after an unexpected disconnect. Progress saves on successful Trial completion, and the host carries the save.

If you disconnect during The Outlast Trials’ Escalation mode, try to rejoin the ongoing run within five minutes. Escalation progress is saved when a Trial is successfully completed—not continuously—and the host carries the save. If everyone quits, disconnects, or fails before the Trial ends, the run fails and its save is voided. These rules come from Red Barrels’ July 14, 2026 update and apply specifically to Escalation.

First, identify the mode and what happened

The current official guidance is specific to Escalation. It does not establish the same disconnect or save rules for standard Trials, Invasion, or other modes. Before assuming your progress is recoverable, work out which of these situations applies:

  • Mode: Was the group playing Escalation?
  • Trial state: Had the group successfully completed the Trial, or was it still in progress?
  • Who disconnected: Did one player lose connection, or did everyone leave, disconnect, or fail?
  • Elapsed time: If one player unexpectedly disconnected during Escalation, is the five-minute rejoin window still open?

Those distinctions determine which Escalation rule applies; they do not identify the underlying network cause. Red Barrels’ Season 7: Project Boneyard patch notes describe the current Escalation behavior.

What to do after an Escalation disconnect

If one player disconnected unexpectedly

  1. Try to rejoin the ongoing run promptly. Red Barrels documents a five-minute window to rejoin an Escalation run after an unexpected disconnect. The grace period is for rejoining the active run, not a general guarantee that any lost progress can be restored.
  2. Have the host keep the run active while you try. Escalation’s save is host-based, so a disconnected client does not independently carry the run forward.
  3. If the Trial finishes, check the run’s saved state. Progress is saved upon successful completion of a Trial, rather than simply because a player was disconnected.

If the whole group left, disconnected, or failed

Under the July 2026 Escalation rules, if all players quit, disconnect, or fail during a Trial, that run fails and its save is voided. The official notes do not describe this as recoverable local-save corruption, so do not assume that restarting the game or changing local files can restore the run.

If the group completed a Trial before the interruption

Successful Trial completion is the documented save point. The group leader may resume a saved run when the group is in the lobby. Red Barrels’ wording is direct: “Progress is only saved upon successfully completing a Trial.”

How Escalation saves and resumes progress

Escalation separates saved progress between Trials from the state of an active Trial. The host carries the save, and a successful Trial completion is the point at which progress is saved. A disconnected player’s five-minute opportunity to rejoin concerns the ongoing run; it does not replace the Trial-completion save point.

Situation Published Escalation rule What to do
One player unexpectedly disconnects during an active run Five minutes to rejoin the ongoing run (Red Barrels, July 14, 2026). Attempt to rejoin promptly while the run is active.
A Trial is successfully completed Progress is saved upon successful Trial completion (Red Barrels, July 14, 2026). The group leader can resume a saved run when the group is in the lobby.
All players quit, disconnect, or fail during a Trial The run fails and its save is voided (Red Barrels, July 14, 2026). Do not treat that unfinished run as a saved checkpoint.
A disconnect occurs in a mode other than Escalation The cited official guidance does not state equivalent save or rejoin rules for other modes. Do not assume Escalation’s rules apply.

When reporting a recurring problem, include the platform, game mode, exact error message, approximate time, and whether one player or the whole group disconnected. That context can help support understand the incident; it is a practical suggestion, not a publisher-mandated checklist.

Why a disconnect may not be fixable with a single setting

The cited official sources establish Escalation’s save and rejoin behavior, but they do not identify a universal cause or fix for multiplayer disconnects across platforms and modes. They do not verify DNS changes, router or cable purchases, reinstalling the game, or editing local files as solutions. Avoid treating any of those as an official remedy or as a way to recover a failed Escalation run.
