Without the specific players, scoring settings and week, there is no responsible way to name one starter.
What “flex vs. wide receiver” means
A flex is a roster slot, not a type of player. In ESPN’s general slot definition, a flex can accept a running back, wide receiver or tight end, though custom leagues may use different rules. Check your own roster settings before comparing options: a player who is not eligible for the vacant slot is not a replacement. ESPN’s roster settings guidance explains the platform’s slot rules.
If you have both a dedicated WR slot and a flex open, compare all eligible players across both slots. The best lineup may use a receiver in the WR slot and an RB or TE in the flex; the word “flex” does not mean you must choose a non-receiver.
How scoring changes the choice
Use the scoring rules in your league, including any custom settings. ESPN’s standard PPR format awards one point per reception; its non-PPR format gives no extra points for catches. Custom leagues can change reception scoring. Check the settings that apply to your league rather than assuming its format from the platform. In PPR, frequent catches can raise the value of a high-volume receiver or a pass-catching running back. In non-PPR, catches themselves add no points, so yardage and touchdowns make up more of the comparison.

Compare the candidates in this order
- Confirm eligibility. Identify the exact open slot and verify which positions your league allows there.
- Apply your scoring. Account for PPR, half-PPR or non-PPR rules and any league-specific bonuses.
- Estimate opportunity. For receivers and tight ends, consider expected targets and likely routes; for running backs, consider expected touches and receiving involvement. Targets are a useful signal of opportunity, not a guarantee of production. NFL.com Fantasy Managing Editor Graham Barfield put the principle this way: “At the end of the day, we’re chasing targets when it comes to receivers and tight ends, no matter if you play in standard or PPR leagues.” Barfield’s NFL.com flex analysis also includes a historical position-group comparison, discussed below.
- Use current-week projections as a cross-check. ESPN lists weekly projected points, and NFL Fantasy describes comparing projected point differences between a starter and a bench player. Treat projections as estimates, not promises. ESPN’s roster guidance and NFL Fantasy describe these tools.
- Check availability and timing. Review the latest official player availability information and the candidates’ kickoff times. ESPN says roster moves involving a player can be made until that player’s team is scheduled to begin its game in the scoring period, subject to the platform’s rules. Verify the deadline on your platform; once a player’s game starts, a late news change may leave you without that replacement.
What the historical position comparison can—and cannot—tell you
In an NFL.com article published circa 2019, Barfield reported that WR25–WR36 outscored RB25–RB36 by an average of 2.3 PPR points per game across the six seasons considered. In the same historical comparison, RB25–RB36 outproduced WR25–WR36 by 0.4 points per game in standard scoring. Those figures describe position groups in that article’s historical sample; they are not current projections, individual-player predictions or a rule that one position always wins. A quick comparison checklist

When a player-specific answer is possible
To identify the better replacement for a particular week, you need the candidate names, the league’s scoring format and slot rules, the week in question, and current availability information. Player roles, injuries and projections change week to week, so a general position label cannot settle a live start/sit decision.
