For ranked play in the pre-expansion April 2025 meta, Giratina ex/Mewtwo ex and Giratina ex/Darkrai ex were the leading recommendations in Destructoid’s guide, published April 1 and updated April 3. A guide published April 14 also recommended Hitmonlee/Gallade ex/Marshadow, Manaphy/Gyarados ex/Origin Forme Palkia, and Beedrill ex/Meowscarada. These were editorial recommendations, not rankings proven by published win rates; later usage figures show which builds were popular, not which won most often.
Which decks were recommended for ranked play in April 2025?
The answer depends on the date and evidence you mean. Destructoid’s April 1 guide, updated April 3, placed Giratina ex/Mewtwo ex and Giratina ex/Darkrai ex in S tier. Pokémon GO Hub’s April 14 guide added three alternatives with distinct plans: punish opponents who invest energy, build toward powerful Water attackers, or pressure ex Pokémon while disrupting energy.
These recommendations concern the ranked environment before the Celestial Guardians expansion arrived on April 30. They should not be read as a guide to the current live meta or to the post-expansion card pool.
How the leading Giratina ex decks play
Giratina ex / Mewtwo ex: develop energy, then hit hard
Destructoid’s April 3-updated list uses two Giratina ex, one Mewtwo ex, and 17 Trainer cards. Its suggested opening has Mewtwo ex in the Active Spot while Giratina ex develops energy. Dawn can help move energy to Mewtwo ex, which serves as the high-output attacker. The guide also describes Red as adding pressure against ex Pokémon.

The appeal is a relatively direct setup: support energy development, then use Mewtwo ex as the payoff. The precise card counts and set labels belong to that dated list; they are not a guarantee that the same configuration fits a later card pool.
Giratina ex / Darkrai ex / Druddigon: stall and build pressure
Destructoid’s alternative runs two Giratina ex, two Darkrai ex, and two Druddigon alongside Trainers. Druddigon can absorb pressure and punish attacks with passive damage. Darkrai ex adds chip damage as Darkness Energy is attached, while Giratina ex develops into the main attacker.
Rank #2
- 50+ Pokemon Cards
- 5 Holos Guaranteed minimium per order
- 1 GX, EX, V, VMax, Full Art, Tag Team, or Secret Rare
Pokémon GO Hub’s April 14 guide describes the same broad shell and emphasizes retreat support and careful energy management. Compared with the Mewtwo version, this approach layers chip damage and stalling while its main attacker develops.
Three other April recommendations
Hitmonlee / Gallade ex / Marshadow: punish investment
Pokémon GO Hub presents Gallade ex as a way to punish opponents who have accumulated energy, Hitmonlee as a source of bench pressure, and Marshadow as a revenge attacker. This is a matchup-oriented plan: it looks for opportunities to exploit an opponent’s energy investment and damaged targets rather than simply racing to build a large attacker. Those are the guide’s descriptions of the interactions, not a promise of favorable results against every deck.
Rank #3
- 50 assorted Pokemon cards
- Bundle with an LCC deck box that holds upto 100 Pokemon cards
- 1 Double rare legendary Pokemon card
Manaphy / Gyarados ex / Origin Forme Palkia: set up a Water engine
In the April 14 guide, Manaphy helps enable energy development, with Gyarados ex as a payoff and Origin Forme Palkia providing another Water attacker and a way to manage the early game. The key practical concern is Magikarp’s vulnerability before it evolves: survival and evolution timing matter while the deck builds toward its attackers.
Beedrill ex / Meowscarada: combine ex pressure and energy disruption
Pokémon GO Hub’s list pairs two evolution lines from Shining Revelry. The guide highlights Meowscarada’s pressure on ex opponents and Beedrill ex’s ability to interfere with opposing energy. The trade-off is needing to assemble those evolution lines; the source notes that Trainer choices and line counts can be adjusted.

What the reported usage figures say—and what they do not
ComicBook.com reported on May 14, 2025, a usage breakdown attributed to the Pokémon TCG Pocket official account. The observation window was March 27–April 26, so it covers part of March and April but ends before the April 30 expansion. It measures usage share, not win rate or tournament performance.
| Build | Reported usage share | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Darkrai ex / Giratina ex | 7.12% | Most-used listed build in the reported window; not evidence of the highest win rate. |
| Darkrai ex / Giratina ex / Druddigon | 4.63% | Usage share in the reported window. |
| Gyarados ex / Manaphy / Origin Forme Palkia | 4.63% | Usage share in the reported window. |
| Charizard ex / Moltres ex | 3.52% | Usage share in the reported window. |
| Mewtwo ex / Giratina ex | 3.18% | Usage share in the reported window. |
| Exeggutor ex / Meowscarada | 2.23% | Usage share in the reported window. |
| Weavile ex / Darkrai ex | 2.15% | Usage share in the reported window. |
| Beedrill ex / Meowscarada | 2.14% | Usage share in the reported window. |
| Gallade / Hitmonlee / Marshadow | 2.03% | Usage share in the reported window. |
| Mew ex / Dialga ex / Arceus ex / Shaymin | 1.68% | Usage share in the reported window. |
The breakdown supports calling Darkrai ex/Giratina ex the most-used listed build for that period. It does not establish that the deck was objectively strongest. The figures were relayed by a secondary report, and no independent win-rate figure for these decks is established by the cited guides or report.

How to choose among the recommendations
- Prefer a direct attacker setup: the early Giratina ex/Mewtwo ex recommendation is presented as a comparatively straightforward way to develop energy and bring a strong attacker online.
- Prefer layered chip damage and stalling: Giratina ex/Darkrai ex/Druddigon uses Druddigon and Darkrai ex to apply pressure while Giratina ex develops.
- Want to exploit an opponent’s investment: the Hitmonlee/Gallade ex/Marshadow plan is framed around energy-heavy targets, bench pressure, and revenge attacks.
- Want a Water-based setup: Manaphy supports energy development toward Gyarados ex and Origin Forme Palkia, but Magikarp must survive long enough to evolve.
- Are comfortable assembling evolution lines: Beedrill ex/Meowscarada trades setup demands for ex pressure and energy disruption.
Use the tier guide for its early-April editorial assessment, the April 14 guide for additional strategic options, and the later usage breakdown only to understand popularity during March 27–April 26. None of these sources establishes a controlled comparison of deck win rates.
