Evaluate a 3-and-D wing by judging two distinct contributions: whether the player makes three-pointers in a role that suits the offense, and whether they defend perimeter players and team actions reliably. The label is a role description, not a standardized statistical category, so there is no universal percentage, attempt total, or defensive metric that qualifies a player.
What does “3-and-D wing” mean?
A 3-and-D wing is expected to provide useful perimeter shooting and perimeter defense. Those skills should be assessed separately before deciding whether they fit together in a particular team role. A player may shoot well but struggle with the required defensive assignments, or defend effectively without providing enough shooting value for the offense.
Set the context before comparing anyone: specify the league, season, role, and evidence you are using. NBA tracking definitions and dashboards are useful for NBA comparisons; they should not automatically be treated as universal measures across leagues.
How to evaluate the shooting
Start with makes, attempts, and percentage
Use three-point makes, attempts, and percentage together. The NBA defines 3PT FG% as made three-pointers divided by attempts in its stat glossary. Attempts matter: a high percentage over a small number of shots may not represent the same evidence as a similar percentage on a larger, sustained workload. State the season and sample you are evaluating rather than presenting a percentage on its own.

Check whether the shots match the role
Look beyond the headline percentage. Consider three-point volume, shot locations, whether attempts are catch-and-shoot or arise from another role-relevant action, and how difficult the looks are. A player who converts the shots a team needs from its wing role may be a better fit than a percentage alone suggests.
NBA tracking measures can add context. The NBA glossary describes defender distance as the distance from the ball to the defender, and defender pressure as a proprietary player-tracking measure of how closely a player is guarded, informed by defensive principles. Its 3PT FG%+ measure compares three-point percentage with expected percentage. These NBA-specific measures can help describe performance relative to modeled shot difficulty; they are not a complete account of repeatable shooting skill.

How to evaluate the defense
Use film to assess the assignment
Review possessions that show whether the player can contain the ball, navigate screens, close out under control, position themselves as a helper, recover after helping, and communicate. Ask whether they can handle the matchups and responsibilities required by the team’s scheme. These are practical film-review prompts, not skills that one official statistic fully measures.
Use defensive statistics as supporting evidence
NBA tracking and hustle statistics can help describe what happens around a defender. The NBA Stats glossary defines a contested three as an attempt a defensive player or team contests by closing out and raising a hand before release. It defines defensive matchup percentage as the share of a defender’s overall possessions spent guarding a particular opponent, and defensive rebound chances as chances when the player is closest to the ball during the rebound window.
Rank #3
Interpret those measures alongside film and the player’s assignment. A matchup share describes where defensive possessions were spent; it does not, by itself, establish how well the player defended. Contests and rebound chances likewise offer evidence about events and involvement, not a complete verdict on defensive quality.
Do not mistake box-score events for the whole job
Steals and blocks are visible, but defense can also work through positioning and disruption. In its October 1, 2025 explainer, the NBA wrote: “While defense has been measured via traditional counting stats (blocks, steals, deflections) for decades, there is much more to defense besides what may show up in a box score.” For a wing, film can reveal help positioning that deters a drive or an action that disrupts an offense even when it does not produce a conventional box-score event. The NBA’s Defensive Pressure Score explainer describes this broader view of defensive impact.

How to compare 3-and-D candidates
Compare players who have similar roles and responsibilities, and keep the season and context consistent. A useful comparison considers several kinds of evidence rather than ranking players by one percentage or defensive statistic.
- Shooting: three-point attempts and performance, with the season and sample stated.
- Shot context: locations, difficulty, and expected-shooting context where available.
- Defensive assignment: the matchups the player actually took and matchup share, interpreted in light of scheme and opponent quality.
- Defensive activity: contests and other observable events, checked against film of positioning and disrupted actions.
- Finishing possessions: defensive rebound chances and whether the player completes relevant defensive possessions.
The NBA Players Defense Dash 3PT dashboard provides opponent three-point data and filters for season, season type, per mode, player position, team, and opponent. Use it as a comparison resource, not as proof on its own that a player is a good or poor defender.

What makes the evaluation credible?
- Name the league, season, role, and comparison group.
- Pair shooting percentage with attempts and shot context.
- Use expected-shooting and tracking measures only with their NBA-specific definitions in mind.
- Pair defensive numbers with film of assignments, positioning, and team actions.
- Explain the evidence behind the conclusion instead of applying an invented cutoff.
