To follow an MLB replay review, keep track of four things: the call on the field, the specific call under review, the replay ruling, and any announced change to runner or base placement. The replay official can change the call, confirm it, or let it stand because the evidence did not meet the threshold for changing it. The decision is final.
What happens during an MLB replay review?
A review begins after a manager challenges an eligible call or the crew chief initiates a review. Replay officials at MLB’s Replay Command Center examine the call or calls submitted for review. The crew chief announces that the play is under review, then gives the ruling and any runner-placement changes afterward. See MLB’s replay review rules glossary and its explanation of replay review rules.
A manager challenge applies to the calls the manager identifies; it does not automatically put every part of a complex play under review. The replay official’s authority is limited to the challenged calls or a call accepted for review by the crew chief.
Challenge limits and timing
- A team starts a standard game with one manager challenge. All-Star and postseason games start with two.
- A successful challenge is retained.
- MLB’s glossary says the manager signals immediately and, after the umpire is alerted, has 15 seconds to decide whether to challenge.
What do “changed,” “confirmed,” and “let stand” mean?
| Announcement | Meaning | What to watch next |
|---|---|---|
| Changed or overturned | The replay official changes the call on the field. | MLB says the official uses discretion to place the teams as they would have been if the correct call had originally been made. Listen for any announced base or runner adjustment. |
| Confirmed or upheld | The original call is supported by the replay decision. | The original ruling remains in effect; note any separate runner-placement announcement. |
| Let stand | There was not clear and convincing evidence to change the call. | The call remains in effect, but “let stand” does not mean replay proved the original call correct. |
MLB describes the replay decision as final: a reviewable call that is upheld or changed is not subject to further review or revision. The ruling applies to the specific call or calls accepted for review, not automatically to every event in the play.

How to keep the review straight while watching
- Remember the original call. Note whether the runner was called safe or out, or what other ruling the umpire made.
- Identify what is being reviewed. Listen for the specific call the manager challenged or the crew chief accepted for review.
- Listen for the result. The crew chief will announce whether the call changed, was confirmed, or stood.
- Check the game state. Watch for any announced adjustment to a runner’s position or a base, especially after an overturned call.
How long does a review take?
MLB’s glossary says a decision is expected within a two-minute period, with some exceptions permitted; that is not a guaranteed maximum. In an explanation published March 27, 2023, MLB reported that the average review during the 2022 season lasted 1 minute, 31 seconds, measured from the team challenge to the announced verdict. That historical average is not a current timing promise. MLB’s replay review rules explanation provides the procedural context.
Is an ABS ball-strike challenge the same as a replay challenge?
No. MLB announced on September 23, 2025 that the ABS Challenge System would be used in Major League games beginning in 2026. Under that system, a pitcher, catcher, or batter can challenge a ball-or-strike call. It is separate from a manager challenging other reviewable plays, such as a tag at a base. When a broadcast shows a challenge, first identify whether the disputed event is a pitch call or a play in the field. See MLB’s ABS Challenge System announcement.
