They describe different outcomes, so none should be treated as a complete measure of a goalie’s individual ability.
What does GAA mean in hockey?
Goals-against average (GAA) is the number of goals a goalie allows per 60 minutes of playing time. The NHL formula is: goals allowed (GA) × 60 ÷ minutes played (MIN). The NHL glossary states: “Multiply goals allowed (GA) by 60 and divide by minutes played (MIN).”
A lower GAA means fewer goals conceded for an equivalent amount of playing time. Because the stat counts goals rather than shots, it also reflects the team’s defensive context—not only the goalie’s performance.
How is goalie save percentage calculated?
Save percentage (SV%) is saves divided by shots faced. The NHL glossary defines it this way: “Save percentage is determined by dividing saves by shots faced.” It is usually displayed as a decimal: .900 means the goalie stopped 90% of recorded shots on goal.

SV% focuses on the proportion of shots stopped, while GAA uses playing time as its basis. But SV% does not show how difficult those shots were. Shot circumstances can matter when assessing performance; traditional statistics do not isolate individual goalie skill. See the Seattle Kraken’s explanation of save percentage and GAA for discussion of shot context and comparison with average save percentage.
What counts as a shutout in the NHL?
A shutout means the opposing club scores no goals. It is a game outcome, not a rate like GAA or SV%.

If two goalies combine for a shutout, neither receives individual shutout credit; the NHL records a club shutout instead. That is the NHL glossary’s official rule.
How should you compare goalie stats?
Use the same season and competition, and account for playing time and role before drawing comparisons. A goalie who starts regularly and a relief goalie with fewer appearances may have very different workloads. Read GAA and SV% together: one relates goals to minutes, the other relates saves to shots faced. Shutouts add a discrete team result, but depend on the opposing club scoring zero and on the NHL’s individual-credit rule.

The NHL’s December 2019 statistics redesign described presenting information such as start quality and complete or incomplete games alongside other stats. That article documents a historical redesign, not a guarantee that those exact views or labels remain in the current interface.

Among goalies with at least 25 games played, Scott Wedgewood recorded a .921 save percentage, a 2.02 GAA, and four shutouts for Colorado in the 2025–26 regular season, according to the Colorado Avalanche’s June 25, 2026 season recap. These figures illustrate how the three stats can describe the same season from different angles; they are not universal good-or-bad thresholds or a current leaderboard.
