A defensive midfielder is the broader role; a holding midfielder usually describes a deeper central midfielder whose main emphasis is screening the defense and keeping the team balanced. The terms overlap, though, and neither label fixes exactly how a player must move or pass. In real football, the job depends on the team’s tactics and the phase of play.

What is the difference between a defensive midfielder and a holding midfielder?

Defensive midfielder describes a central midfielder with significant defensive responsibilities: protecting the middle, disrupting opposition attacks and, often, supporting possession. Holding midfielder more specifically emphasizes staying connected to the defense, screening central space and preserving cover when teammates move forward.

That is a distinction in emphasis, not a universal either-or classification. Coaches and commentators often use the terms interchangeably. To understand a player’s actual role, look at where they position themselves, what spaces they protect, how they contribute to possession and who covers when they move.

What does a holding midfielder do?

With the ball: provide an outlet and progress play

A holding midfielder can make themselves available centrally to help the team play out, keep possession moving or advance the ball. FIFA Training Centre’s 2026 coaching material treats the number 6 as involved across build-up, progression and transitions, including with line-breaking passes and switches of play. “Holding” therefore does not mean refusing to pass forward or doing only defensive work. As teammates advance: maintain balance

When full-backs or midfield partners push forward, the holding midfielder may stay deeper to protect the space they leave and reduce the danger of a counterattack. This responsibility is coordinated: a teammate’s forward movement can mean another player takes on more defensive cover. UEFA’s 2026 analysis of modern midfield roles emphasizes that responsibilities can shift rather than remain fixed to one player. When possession changes: protect the middle or engage the ball

After a turnover, the midfielder might screen a pass into a dangerous central area, close a passing lane, delay the counterattack or step forward to pressure the ball. Which response makes sense depends on the team’s instructions and the cover available nearby. The job is not simply to stay in one spot; it is to help the team manage the transition without opening the center.

Is a number 6 the same as a holding midfielder?

“Number 6” commonly refers to the deeper central-midfield role and is often used for a holding midfielder. The terms are not exact synonyms: a number 6’s specific duties come from the team’s tactics, and the player may be asked to build attacks, progress the ball and defend. FIFA’s coaching resource uses the 6 in work spanning multiple phases, rather than defining the role as only a shield in front of the defense.

How do a single pivot and double pivot change the role?

Single pivot

A single pivot is one deeper midfielder positioned behind more advanced midfielders. That player has a clear responsibility for screening the center and helping preserve balance. If they are drawn away from the central zone or an opponent bypasses them, the team needs other players to provide cover.

Double pivot

A double pivot uses two deeper midfielders together. They can share screening and build-up duties, with one moving toward the ball or advancing while the other adjusts to cover. There is no universal split in which one must be a ball-winner and the other a passer; assignments vary with the coach, opponent and match situation.

How to identify the role in a match

A position label or formation graphic can be a useful starting point, but watch the player’s actions across several phases instead. These questions help distinguish what the player is actually being asked to do:

  • Starting position and protection: How close do they stay to the center-backs, and which spaces or passing lanes do they screen?
  • Defensive method: Do they hold their position, intercept, press forward or directly engage an opponent?
  • Possession contribution: Do they mainly offer a safe outlet, move the ball forward, or do both?
  • Movement and cover: When they leave the central zone, does a teammate take over that space?

UEFA’s 2026 analysis describes modern midfield roles as fluid and considers whether one player can perform multiple roles. The useful question is less “Which label does this player have?” and more “What responsibilities do they carry in this team?”

What does “Holding” mean in EA SPORTS FC 25?

In EA SPORTS FC 25, “Holding” is a game-specific role under the defensive-midfielder position, with its own focus options and behavior in FC IQ. That menu is useful for understanding the game’s tactical system, but it is not a universal definition of how real-world coaches use “holding midfielder.” EA SPORTS: EA SPORTS FC 25 | FC IQ Deep Dive.
